Best Place to Grow: Humboldt, Oakland, Sebastopol, Santa Cruz or Redding?

In terms of bay area bud, the idea that Oakland is the grow capital is lol. Oakland grows just as much bud and it's just as good as every other bay town/city. Oakland as the weed epicenter of bay area is just a marketing gimmick. 10x more bud is sold in San Francisco than Oakland.

When you talk about Humboldt bud and bay area bud you're talking about two different things entirely. Most Humboldt bud is outdoor organics. Most bay area bud is hydro. Good and bad bud come from both places.

I spend a lot of time up in Humboldt and in the bay area. At one time Humboldt had a significant quality advantage, but now not so much. All the old Humboldt strains are now all over northern California. On the average I think bay area bud is actually slightly better, but humboldt buds are way cheaper.

The one thing humboldt does have is really good indoor organics, but that's a very small % of the bud coming from there. The problem with humboldt outdoor is they get a lot of rain around harvest time and unless their shit is in a greenhouse all that outdoor bud gets mold if they don't harvest early.

Basically, humboldt had a significant advantage due to superior genetics for a long time, but that advantage has pretty much evaporated. Since most bay area weed is just humboldt genetics grown in an indoor climate controlled environment, it usually ends up better than most of the weather dependent humboldt bud.

On the average, I'll take bay area bud over humboldt bud any day.
Oh, and to answer the OPs original question;

The correct answer to that question is Sebastopol or Santa Cruz.
This guy knows what's up. I brought some really good indoor organics up to humboldt, and they were all like "whoa! that is way better than this outdoor". But they have literally tons of outdoor organics. Seb-town is cool if you are into hippy shit, decent food, hot hippy women, and high rent. It is totally a grower/hot milf town. Peace in medz is there and sebastopol will surely have "fair" local regulation in place once 19 passes (51% yes 41% no as of late). Outdoor rip offs are extremely common, as everyone knows what goes on there, and groups of high school guys go from yard to yard in the fall, so get a pitbull :)

i know that place, its called Shangri-La. Floods are local to microclimates. Sebastopol floods for sure, bad, but it all depends on your elevation and relation to the laguna. Fires are worse in so cal, but that also depends. Two years ago nor cal was gross with smoke.

Good jobs all around???? Buddy, unemployment is sky high. Can't comment on where "good jobs all around would be". This IS Cali. The state is broke as shit.

I love these threads. I put one up a long time ago as I was researching my next move. Humboldt tradition is strong and limits are high. Bay area is unique. Microclimates unlike anywhere else. San jose is the only town in Santa Clara county not to ban dispensaries and have great limits.. So do sebastapol, Santa Cruz, SF. Actually you could theoretically throw out medical limits for the entire state after the Kelly case removed limits. Now arrests are whatever the cop thinks is "reasonable". Actually Colorado has great laws. You can profit all you want on dispensaries but 70% must be grown in-house. That makes for a huge warehouse to stay in business.

Santa Cruz seems like the answer to this. I've talked to a few people and have been there, its a very chill area and could say I'd feel very comfortable there. Bay area, north are good too. Bay area is foggy but there is a lot to do and a lot of culture so it would be hard to get bored but expect to shell out $$ either way for real estate. If you want to go more north it gets more reasonable, but there is less to do and even less clear days. Up to you. Far up north, redding is OK but Humboldt/Shasta are the most laid back about the laws. In the end stay in accordance with your local/state laws and you will be good. I dont think oakland would be such a good choice on the account of getting robbed

Well here in the SD area you can buy a cultivators license for between 200 and 300 a year that allows for up to 99 plants, but it has to be an indoor grow. That's what we are hoping to scale up to within 6 or 7 months, we have some experimenting to do first. And as long as you don't break the limit including clones your okay.

Personally I love SoCal for the weather and things to do, but to each their own bongsmilie

Peace out :weed:

Yeah, the state supreme court Kelly Decision struck down plant limits set by cities and counites. 99 is the number.

http://www.safeaccessnow.org/article.php?id=5876

The defendant, Patrick Kelly, is a qualified medical marijuana patient treating a number of conditions, including hepatitis C, chronic back pain, and cirrhosis. Kelly was arrested in October of 2005 for possessing 12 ounces and cultivating 7 plants at his home in Lakewood, California. Kelly was convicted a year later by a jury, which concluded that he had exceeded the state-imposed "limits" of 8 ounces of dried medical marijuana and six mature plants. California's Second Appellate District Court overturned Kelly's conviction on the grounds that legislatively-imposed limits on possession and cultivation of medical marijuana are an unconstitutional restriction to a voter approved initiative (Proposition 215, the Compassionate Use Act of 1996).

Cultivator's license? What is this witchcraft you speak of?
A cultivators permit is a legal rec from the doctor that allows for up to 99 plants thereby bypassing the 6/12 or here in SD 12/24 plant limits. My doctor charges $279 for the rec and it also must be renewed yearly just like your regular rec so I do both at the same time. Check with your local doctors for info on this.

Peace out :weed:

You have neither a permit nor a license, and I think setting this straight is really important as those terms all have different legal meaning and we are discussing a legal issue. You have a doctor's recommendation, and an expensive one at that.

Calling it a "legal rec" is short sighted as that comes down to the court's ruling if/when you get to that level. You have a recommendation from a doctor which states you may grow/possess Cannabis within state guidelines.

The cops can still do as they please and the burden is on you and your doctor to prove this recommendation covers your garden size. These doctor's also charge you if they have to come testify on your behalf, usually a thousand dollars or more per day. Just want to get this straight. Rec: Yes. Permit: No. License: No. Legal: Depends
Peace

it all depends who you know... having lived in humboldt for years, and not at all in the bay, i have a different experience. There is still literally tons of kill churning out of humboldt every day. more and more of that goes out of state, now that the in cali margin is basically gone. so the best of humboldt doesnt get to other parts of cali. humboldt still has that name that people associate. for that same reason, the place is saturated with new growers turning out boo boo. that crap usually fits into the club scene because most clubs lowball veteran growers & wait for the desperate newbys to come with their b grade. i badmouth clubs that do that because it makes it more difficult for those that insist on high quality. maaaaaaan, i will smoke all this before i sell it for oregano prices. matter of fact...time to go smoke a stick of this 707 headband right now! |D

awesome post danabis. I just happened to stumble across your post, get back to me on that electricity thing. Also, if you know a place to rent that is friendly and reasonable price wise let me know. I just want to get out to Cali as soon as possible!

As I said, there is some very high quality bud in Humboldt, but the majority of the bud there is standard outdoor just like you find anywhere else. It's great because it's so cheap there, but on the average bud coming out of humboldt isn't superior to bud coming out of the bay area. It just isn't. It's priced a lot better, but it isn't higher quality.

that crap usually fits into the club scene because most clubs lowball veteran growers & wait for the desperate newbys to come with their b grade.
I speak from my experience spending time in humboldt usually staying with humboldt growers when I go there (I'll see you tomorrow night Arcata!), not just the buds I see in bay area clubs.

What you're saying does have some truth to it though. Many bay area clubs aren't paying what they should for humboldt top shelf. It's a hydro market in the bay. People in the bay associate organics with humboldt/mendo B grade outdoor, so organics don't sell as well as hydro.

When I bring friends down from humboldt to unload stuff on the clubs they usually get less money for their indoor organics than they would for growing hydro. Hydro is just more desirable in the bay. This is changing slowly, but the money gap still exists, so most top shelf bud from humboldt doesn't make it down to the bay.

because most clubs lowball veteran growers & wait for the desperate newbys to come with their b grade
It's not about that. If you show up to a club with top shelf hydro, clubs do pay very very well for it and usually don't mess around with you. It's just that organics don't sell as quickly, so even if it is fire, they don't want to pay more for something that will sit on the shelf longer.

i badmouth clubs that do that because it makes it more difficult for those that insist on high quality.
Well that's tricky. I kind of agree with you but I understand the clubs point of view as well.

Basically, clubs go for buds that look good over buds that are good. They buy buds based on what sells quickly and what they can charge for it, not on quality.

I get the thought process behind doing this. They figure if that's what people want and will pay the most for, that is what they should carry. But there is a big flaw in that logic too. I think clubs would get more repeat business if they went strictly for quality rather than what buds sell the quickest.
