BLACK MAGIC POTTING SOIL

Not sure but its yellow and when i squeeze it it pops and has juice in it
That is odd
It's Osmocote, or some knock-off. They have an organic product, but as far as I know, if you see it in your soil it's probably not organic. The organic line is usually too expensive for potting soil companies to incorporate it yet without really jacking the prices. Also, it's a product of Scotts....which is also Miracle Grow.

I tend to stay away from soils that have Osmocote in them. Not because they don't perform well, (I've never used them, so I can't talk about performance) it just reminds me of fertilizer sticks and Seven dust...old school shit that wasn't doing anything a damn good. Just my 2 cents. :peace:

Thanks for the info...I am not sure what I will do next I might not change a thing and keep using all the same stuff I starred with.

I would imagine that stuff will work great as an organic base. Check out subcool's super soil if you want to just give it straight water all the way till harvest. Otherwise I would look into getting some liquid extracts, like liquid kelp, or fish emulsions. Depending on how long the plant will be living in that dirt you'll more than likely end up having to add some liquid fertilizer later, or top dress but I recommend liquid for a beginner. I would imagine, with your average photo strains, you could probably get through veg without adding anything as is. Subcool's method is aimed towards not adding anything other than the amendments that are composted in when you mix it. The quality of one method over the other is a matter of experience, but both methods of organics work well. It's more a matter of personal preference and how much work you want to put into the soil a month before you ever plant in it.

Happy to help. Just keep in mind, organics (done properly) are an investment. There's a shit load of amendments out there, each having their own blend of micro and macro nutrients. This link list the npk values of almost anything you could think of.

http://www.lundproduce.com/N-P-K-Value-of-Everything.html

It's also not a bad idea to have some knowledge of composting and soil ecology. Microorganisms require a lot of nitrogen to break down something with a high carbon content. One time I tried to use scotts top soil mixed with perlite and organic amendments to grow with, and it was an epic failure. They didn't die, probably luck, but I'm sure they wanted to. Scotts top soil contains a lot of partially composted forest materials. Lots of mulch looking stuff. I was unable to keep up with the demand for nitrogen because the microbes would consume it in order to break down the bits of carbonous wood before the roots could get any.

I'm sure this black gold will not suffer the same fate, looks like quality soil. I was just a noob and thought I could take the cheap route while at that time I didn't know shit about mycology or soil ecology. I know better now. And it is possible to grow good weed with scotts top soil, but it would take a summer in a compost pile to break down all the carbon to prepare it for healthy plant growth. Perhaps one of these days, when it's legal where I'm at, I'll compost some Scotts to show RIU how to use it to grow good weed.

Here's a link for composting:

There are a lot of free pdf textbooks on google to learn mycology, and soil ecology. You can grow great organic weed without this knowledge. But do you want to just follow directions or pioneer your own methods?

Has tried that black magic potting soil...I have used there smartpots and the trays for starters...but I'm curious to know if anyone has had any luck with it?
It was the first thing I used over twenty years ago and it's still a solid contender.

This stuff just came out
It's too early. I was thinking of black gold. I'll check out the black magic.

Just checked it out. It looks pretty solid. I'll probably have to try it out myself. It's also really convenient that The Home Depot carries it.

I thought the same thing when I first opened the thread. Black gold is some good shit. I had some really good luck with organic MG once as well. Wouldn't go out of my way for it, but it works in a pinch with a little perlite and a few amendments.
