Boom grow question

First run through growing booms from a store bought kit. Cakes have been in a bin for a little over a week and I'm getting the first pins now. My question is, there a few small pins on the cakes, surrounded by small snowflake looking fingers, but there are much larger established pins(1" or so) coming directly off the jar lids that the cakes are sitting on. Is this common and why is this happening?

Its been some time since I've grown any cubes, and I may be wrong, but the small snowflake fingers your describing is just good aggressive mycellium, I believe the proper terminology is rhyzomorphic growth.

I have no idea why you have pins coming from the lid of your jar. Is there a possibility you could post a picture?
