just starting my new grow closet and have decided on using a bubble system.

have designe my own set up using a large tupperware box with net bakets and clay balls with the o2 being pumped in through pipes at the bottom of the tub simple cheep and i hope effective.

my question is how much o2 do i need to have pumping through and is it continues or does it regulate with the lighting regime?? and does the clay balls need to be in or just above the water?? and what temp does the water need to be for best results??

i am going to be have a veg tub and a flowering tub in the same closet on different levels can anyone recommend a pump that can be used in both flowering and veg tubs?? and can i get away with using one pump for both?

sorry if these sound like stupid questions but not done a set up like this befor many thanks for your advice..........

The idea is to have enough air running into the airstone to create as much oxygenation as possible. If you've got a good, strong pump (say, the $20 or $25 dollar models) and a splitter, one pump should work well for two tubs. However, if you buy the cheaper pump ($7-$12), chances are it won't be strong enough for more than one airstone. Personally, I use separate pumps for each tub. This way, I can purchase the less expensive pumps, and if I have to move or take down a tub for some reason, I can unplug the pump and not have to worry about the absence of air to the other tub.

You'll want to make sure you've got enough water in the tub as well. First off, there needs to be enough water for the air bubbles to travel through in order to make more of a mess when they pop free of the surface. You'll also want the water level high enough to where it comes within an inch or so of the bottom of your mesh pots. This way enough water is splashing up into the pots, across the hydroton, and ultimately into your rockwool/coco coir/etc.

Use double sided tape, aquarium silicon, or some other water-resistant adhesive to secure your airstones to the bottom of the pump. If you use silicon or caulk of some kind, make sure you have a somewhat thick layer between the bottom of the tub and the airstone - this will allow for the flexing of the bottom of the tub when it is moved, emptied of water, or filled with water. Otherwise, you take a chance of your airstone becoming unsecured or, even worse, broken. Secure the stones directly underneath the area(s) where your plants' roots will be hanging, assuring maximum exposure to oxygen.

I belive a water temp of 74*-78* F is good, though I may be a few degrees off either way. I maintain my res temp in that area with little action on my part and my plants love it.

I just started a bubbler myself, 14 gallon tub filled with 8 gallons of water. 4 net pots. I just bought a pump with two air plugs and its got enough power to handle 2 5.5 inch airstones. I've got one more pump and airstone for good measure. From what i've read you really can't have too many so i'd say buy as many as ur space or budget allows.

you cant have enough o2 in your pots. i tried airstones before but have found a much better way of saturating the roots with fine bubbles. get yourself some perforated 10mm hose cut it and join the ends together with a t piece so you can attach your airline. you can make it any size you want and the results are superb wipe the floor with airstones. just feed it through a couple of stainless bolts to anchor it. try it. worked for me.

I like the tube with holes version also - i had 2 airstones, but once the roots got THICK, they drowned out the bubbles pretty good...
