Budget bubbleponics might not be plausible

Here's the situation: I'm trying to grow bubbleponic herb with a friend, in HIS closet.

This means that although I'm the one who seems more committed to the project, he pretty much has ownership of it.

Before you try and warn me about getting ripped off, we're tight, and anyway I have my own outdoor plant at home :P

We're on a really tight budget, because yeah... not my house, pretty much he's paying for whatever we get.

There are 4 plants(kindof, they're basically all dead :/) in rockwool, in hydrocorn. its in more of a tub than a bucket, not nearly deep enough. there's no net and cover, its all just wide net baskets, probably not humid at all for the roots. We have a 40W Bright White fluro and a 65W cool daylight. They get too hot to touch, don't know whats going down there?? thought CFLs were meant to be cool. They're on huge stiff lamps hung from the ceiling, after (if) the plants grow another inch, we wont be able to raise the lamps higher.

yeah you can see this whole thing is killing me. Stress plants by a stressed grower.

:wall:

My priorities:
1. Get a tall bucket and a proper net, they're so cheap right?
2. Get a better light set up.

WHERE DO YOU GET CFL FIXTURES WITH A WALL SOCKET??? OMG PLEAASE I NEED TO KNOW!! I've looked so hard on the net, in big W etc... It doesn't need a reflector, I just want a fixture.

Replies would be awesome, but i basically just needed to get this all off my chest...

I'd say give it up. If you keep stressing about someone else's inability or unwillingness to give minimal care to plants, you'll end up like the plants. Plus, if he takes security as seriously as he seems to take everything else.......

yeah true, but i really want to have a DWC grow haha.

yeah he never locks his door *rolleyes*

When I get my own space I'll give it a shot.. but that'll be a few years down the line

Sorry to say, but I agree with the others. It's not worth it to spend money on this project because it sounds like it's almost a guaranteed failure. Good luck with your soil plant though. Pics?

Get a light socket at any hardware store, they are like 50 cents. then go to a salvation army or some place and get a power cord from any kind of charger, just cut the cord how long you want and take the two wired and hook it up

For $5 you can get a cheap trouble light at walmart. You can leave the cage on or take it off. These are good for suspending cfls upside down into foliage.

I don't believe you two have the money needed to get any of the many things you need to pull off a successful dwc grow and even if you did it makes no sense whatsoever given your limits because you aren't going to grow any more than if you had used soil. You're limited by space, money, light, age, housing, experience, and your friend on top of everything else that's normal.

Throw them in some good dirt (meaning quality soil that you buy not dirt from your yard) get some more lights and hope for the best.

If you are going to goodwill just buy a bathroom vanity strip to plug the cfl's into and pick up a real fan while you are there, you'll need like $5 or less.

Yeah, I've got a different thread in for the outdoor grow, its hardly appropriate in a DWC forum haha
I've read so much about bubbleponics and DWC growing, so I think that I could get it going pretty well with some effort.
My friend's cupboard is perfect, which is why its so hard to give it all up.

Main thing is that I live in Canberra, Aus, so there's not many big hardware stores. Bunnings is one, but it didn't have light fittings with sockets, only fancy lamps.
Isn't it a bit wierd that I can't find any fittings like what you're all talking about on the web? I searched ebay, amazon, and spent a day googling different terms

edit: Also the plant in my dp is one from the outdoor grow

I'm still trying to find a simple socket for the CFLs though. About cutting the wires, would that mean tapping directly into the house electricity or just shoving the wires in the wall socket? :S
Don't want to burn down his house...

Also I live in AUS so there isn't a Wallmart. Closest thing we have is big W, and i looked there: nothing.
Not even our biggest hardware store has CFL fittings with simple sockets.

And the bathroom vanity strip thing, again it seems you would end up with two uninsulated wires needing direct access to the house electricity...

I think it's just a language barrier thing...

What we call a cfl you might call a twirly torch, a vanity strip might be something like a sheila lighter.

Take pictures to a hardware store. :)

If you have a walmart, ANYTHING.... A CFL is just a lightbulb. Any standard socket will hold a CFL. Look for a work lamp! Something that you would hang beside your car if you were changing the oil at night... They run from 3-10 dollars, and you can then attach a splitter and off you go! I dunno about shipping, but here is an example for what you should look for!
