Beeltles 001.jpgSept 7 2012 002.jpgSept 7 2012 001.jpgthe first is a beetle of some sort. i think. the second is a preying mantis egg casing. i watched her lay it. first time i ever saw a mantis doing that. coolest thing i ever saw, well today anyway. the last is a pesky deer. but since i'm a city boy it's still pretty cool to see one out my front door.

shoulda took a vid of the process. i caught it near the tail end. i don't know what happens to mantis after the season is over. do they just die.? they are incredibly curious and docile. you can pick them up and they just look at you. i like how they sway back and forth like they're trying to hipnotize you...lol

Is the Lantos egg sac in a boxwood?? Looks like it. That's where I always find em. Since I'm always trimming them at work I find a lot of em. Usually bring em home and put em in my veggie garden. Mantis are great for eating all the pesky bugs that eat up our gardens.

Nice yard man, boy I got some deer pics from the house I grew up in. Smack in the middle of a beautiful oak forest with patches of birch and a lot of quaking aspen. Love quaking aspen, even if you can't feel a breeze the leaves still dance around like there is a gust blowing, let alone the beautiful bark and fall colors, might be my favorite tree

ive never hears the word lantos. ill look it up. she laid it in a flower box of impatients that i had to trash.(i saw her hovering around that very flower box for a week or two and i recognized her by a marking on her leg.) powdery mildew and rot. so i relocated it to a jap holly. box all have opposite leaves. all spp of ilex have alternate leaves. i once watched an egg casing in spring as the egg casing popped open and dozens of tiny, fully formed manti emerged, big as my finger nail. just hopping all over. my favorite beneficial by far. an aristocrate among insects. beautiful, i'm not ashamed of saying. there are organic pest control services now that will implant your property with all kinds of benificial insects like ladybird beetles and mantis. instead of blanket spraying hort oil or permitrin all over everything. ppl are so quick to spray. its becuz the companies that spray make mega bucks doing it. i know. i used to do it until last year. they instill fear. offer a cheap alternative and just kill everything. i'm happy to say i dont do that anymore.

Fucking Mantis dude damn this auto correct. I hadn't checked responses for a couple days so I just noticed the misspell haha. Sorry dude. I've never heard Lantos either but ill ask auto correct what it is. But on the Mantis note....shortly after commenting on this thread I found a nest myself. On the stalk of one of my outdoors :) they shall protect.
