Built my first grow light...

After accumulating some experience with shop lighting using china 10w leds from ebay and some aluminum tubing, I decided I was ready to make my first grow light.

While I'm not growing the beautiful cash crops you folks are, I figure cannabis is going to want the same fundamentals as peppers and tomatoes so this was the place to learn.

A special thanks goes to member SupraSPL for not only suggesting which white leds to use, but providing me an easy link right to Fasttech to purchase them.

I got the power supply from ebay.. its running 27-37v @900ma constant current.
The white leds are Cree XML2 4300K - 4500K
The reds are Cree XP-E 620nm - 630nm.

The aluminum tubing is just scrap from an old elevated hunting platform and I yanked the little fan from an old computer video card. Even the IEC plug was ripped out of an old ATX power supply.

Heat sink compound was just some off name china stuff that seems to work fine. I drilled and tapped every #8-32 screw instead of using epoxy heat sinks.

Total build cost was about $40. Actual measured power draw is 22.6 watts with a kill-a-watt meter. This thing is far brighter than two 4ft fluorescent bulbs.

ive been reading here that the china leds are not anygood for growing, you may want to read some more about them
i also made my own led grow light for my current grow, but not with china leds, worked great,i just added 150 watt hps for the final 2 weeks of flower, looks like i got about 3 oz from 4 small plants, not near as good as my last 1 plant outdoor grow, which i got 7 oz of nice bulky buds,4 weighing over 25 grams each,

What do you mean by china leds? Are you talking about the cheap no-name ebay stuff or the cree leds that come from china?

I bought my Cree grow leds from fasttech that SupraSPL linked to.. (I'm pretty sure he knows what he's doing).. The china leds I was referring to are just for shop lighting above my work bench.

That is an awesome little panel. Do you know what your heat sink temps are?
Thanks!
I let it run for 16 hours straight yesterday in a room with ambient temps at about 68f and the heat sink warmed to a temp that was just barely noticeably above ambient. Even after running all day, you can put your finger right on one of the led's and it isn't hot at all.
