Bushcrafting, the weed addition: Bugout patch

No shit. In 2005, the hurricanes kept coming, one even doing a pirouette in the Western Atlantic before coming ashore.

Peeps were acting shell shocked after awhile, for real.
That was a crazy year for sure. Four Cat 5's if my memory is correct. We bought a generator at the end of the season. Haven't used it yet.

I don't remember them being that powerful. But numbers can make up for a lot.

What else is warming up in the eastern Atlantic?

I haven't been paying attention. But a quick look at NOOA show there is a disturbance that has less than 40% chance of developing about mid Atlantic. That looks like it for now.

Maybe we will be so lucky. This year has been bad already. Poor folks in the Carib taking a beating.

Our local weather guys do a good job of keeping up with the tropics. I just don't watch.
I live right up the street from the CSU Department of Atmospheric Sciences, where Dr Bill Gray pioneered hurricane forecasting. That and experiencing a few hurricanes has kept me interested.

Interesting fact; Dr Gray was absolutely not a proponent of climate change/global warming theory. Due to his great prestige in the field, his alternative explanations were carefully investigated and each was found not to fit the evidence.

Today, there is zero doubt among his colleagues and those now doing the same work that not only is climate change a very real phenomena, but that global warming is definitely impacting hurricane forecasting.

I didn't know about him, but I always found it interesting that the most trusted authority on hurricanes was out there in the mountains.

I know, right?

Truth is much more interesting to me than fiction.
Speaking of fiction, I have been working on the outlines to a couple of AT short stories. One of them is hurricane related. All the New York accents I heard in the hurricane evacuees the other week got me to thinking. I can't do new york, because I don;t know it, but I came up with some south florida boys I could relate to.

The outline I came up with while I was hiking last week:

Two Florida Cracker brothers get into the mob's bad graces over some cocaine debts. The mob makes them turn their house near Vero Beach into a grow operation to pay them back. Input one Cat 5 hurricane. Roof and a few walls are missing, and bud all over the place. They take what flowers they can salvage, 200 clones and their big ass truck, and head out while the storm is still blowing. The truck runs out of gas near a REI. There is some broken glass, but no looting yet. They figure back packs would haul the flowers and clones, so they go ahead and break the window out enough for them to slip in. They grab packs, stoves, pots and hiker meals, but also a couple of folding shovels. Later after they had planted the clones in the marshes nearby, they noticed a booklet in one of the packs about the different scenic trails. That part about trail names on the AT really go tthem to thinking. Then they saw they were just a few miles from the Florida trail, so they started walking that way. . . . .

I spent three nights at the camp this week. Got caught up on my trimming. Did a couple three miles of hiking each night. Tried out my new Darn Tough socks. They are going to take some breaking in. Lots rougher than my old Tech Wool socks.

Also got a new battery to charge all my devices, as well as a .7 qt pot. Have not used either of them yet though.

Had to return one pair of Darn Tough socks. Amazon sent Large when I had ordered Extra Large. At 17 bucks a pair, they need to be the right size. They also sent the wrong sized pot. The one I got cost about the same, so I will keep it and just try to order again.

Amazon. Gets the wrong socks and fucks up your pot.

That will never do at RIU!

No doubt. I almost said .7qt aluminium {English version} pot, but I was able to refrain.

The new pot is lighter than the $.50 thrift store pot, and not as big around. 2 cups is kind of tight. Would have liked the 1.25qt that I ordered. But everything fits. I will roll with it for now.

Lots going on the last week or two. The wife's uncle died, after about a week on Hospice care. We took care of the funeral and whatnot. Had expected several nights of house guests, but it turned out to be only one. And when you have a house full of women, it's an extra good reason to go to the camp. I spent most of the night working, {harvest time is also planting time} but I did manage to walk a few miles behind my moon shadow. Last night too, just didn't stay at the camp. Smoked my first Powernap X Sinmint Cookies X GdR last night before my hike, and it's my new favorite. When I took a little stash over to my rest stop spot, I didn't even smoke a bowl, I just left it and hiked on.

Sorry to hear about the passing of a family member. And I'm with you about such gatherings...

Sounds like you made good use of your time!

Thanks. He was 85, so he had a pretty good ride.

I worked a lot of late nights at the camp, so when everyone cleared out yesterday afternoon, I got my sleeping bag {with the special powers} and laid on the couch. I hadn't planned on going to my patch at night, but I slept all afternoon. Then later on when I did get in bed, I slept through to this morning.
