Summer squash varieties, including zucchini and yellow squash, flower earlier than the winter squash varieties. Most summer squashes begin blooming within 35 to 45 days of germination. Winter squashes, which include butternut, acorn and spaghetti squash, may take up to 55 days before they set their first blossoms.
