Can you put clones under a HID light???

I don't have any fluorescent light, and ,quite frankly, I am at the bottom of my expenses at the moment. I grow under 600W MH at the moment (HPS on stand by for budding). I was thinking to take some clones in weeks to come and was wondering if it's okay to have them under the Metal Halide. Now, obviously I won't have it under, but in the shady place, or in the corner of the room so it does not get as much exposure. My room is quite large.

What do you think guys?

yes. MH will be fine. Just put em off to the side.

I take my clones and vegging plants and put them in a little 1.5x2 cabinet for 12 hours and then into the flower cabinet when the HID comes on, saves on some power bills. Seems to work just fine. Mine are pretty much directly under my 400 watt HPS hanging about 2 feet over them. They seem to take it fine. I obviously don't grow a lot but it seems to work just fine :)

as long as the clones are rooted you can blast them hard as hell with any light. more light the better if your trying to get roots I say no keep them away from that mh . it will take for ever to grow those roots cfl or hate to say leds work

Thanks for reply. No, I am talking about fresh cuttings. But tell me, why is the light too strong when I'll have it like 4+ feet away?..

I root under my veg lights (mh). Just keep them further away from light. No point in having more lighting equipment for clones.

a big plastic tote, with the lid cut, to fit a cfl sitting on top - shining in. Works great for clones.
Hi, thanks for the reply. No need to recommend CFLs. We all know that they are ideal for clones, but that ain't the purpose of this thread. The purpose of this thread is to determine whether it can be done with a HID.

I have a another question which is gonna be impossible to asnwer :D. I am a first time grower, so I have only one room, one light...So the question is: When I take my clones shortly before budding, then what am I supposed to do with them later as I'll be switching to 12/12, which obviously isn't beneficial for small plants. Really don't know how to solve this issue — money wise & room wise.

that's why having a seperate mom, and clone room is ideal. But sounds like you think you can do it all under one light, with no grows under your belt.

I don't think I can do it all under one light. Firstly, clones are not necessary for me, only optional; secondly, two more growers said that it can be placed in a vegging room with MH with in a reasonable distance.

I am not disputing that clone room is not ideal, of course it would be; but ideal does not equal necessary.

The big issue I ran into putting clones in my MH early was humidity. Make sure you keep them domed and/or misted otherwise they will dry out fast.

Thanks. Ya, sure, I have a dome bought, rooting hormone and all that. Have a pretty decent mister as well.

It all depends on whether you want to veg the new clones or flower them.

They will continue to root under 12/12 and then force flower once rooted.

However if you want to keep them for the next generation if plants you'd need a second area.
