Central air: Auto vs Fan on

This time of the year when its 60 outside and 45 at night in upstate NY my living air is about 72 degrees and my basement is warm at 78-79 degrees. What would happen if I turned my AC fan to on instead of auto? Would it bring some of that 72 degree air downstairs to cool down the basement?

It would keep circulating the air in the home so it should help as you described. It can be hard on the blower motor though, running all the time.

That would definitely help if you have cold air returns in the basement. The furnace will pull hot air through the cold air returns and push it upstairs. I have a fan pushing air downstairs 24/7. Keeps the basement and whole house much nicer.
