cheap and effective way to get rid of fungus gnats!!!

well two weeks ago i had my first run in with those nasty little buggers known as fungus gnats. I usually grow in a mix of light soil such as plagron lightmix amended with about 40% perlite however this run i decided as i would be attempting my first single bubble bucket i would fill the rest of the grow tent with some regular seeds in some organic soil and let them go 12 12 from seed. The soil i chose for simplicity was guanokalong bat mix so i could simply water and let them do their thing. however much to my dismay the soil was infested! with fungus gnats. A quick browse on the local grow shop website showed that products like mosquito bits are not available in the UK and the best they offered was a product called gnat nix which basically looked like sand. So being poor and not having the £20 to spend on sand i chose an alternative product with the same concept, cling film!!! i simply lined the top of the pots with some cling film and dunked the pots in a bucket of water when i needed to water and voila no more gnats !!

Bacteria need three things to start and thrive
  1. Darkness
  2. Moisture
  3. Warmth
Saran Wrap helps give two of the three. Not everything that you will get under there will be beneficial. Diatomaceous earth is a good start to use on top and mixed in the first few inches. Keeps more than fungus gnats away.

believe me man i thought about that but for me it really has not been a problem as the top inch or so of soil dried out i replaced the wrap once and there has been no condensation on the wrap also within two weeks i was able to take it off completely and just continued to water from the bottom of the pots

I'm sure the gnats will thank you for their bath,

but it won't solve the 'real' issue, thats theres gnat larvae(eggs) hatching outta your soil,

by far its best to replace the soil, even take it back and bitch at the man, you do have the receipt..?

at most, gnats eat the roots in worm stage, also fungus and any bacteria

then grow wings to breed, ...so you missed the point!

that they are still eating the roots, until they got wings

I have used Neem Oil watered in, works well

but your grow will be plagued with these critters

later when you are about to toss it all in,

spray cooking oil on a yellow card hang above the plants to catch them ....easy!!

so stay sharp and good luck
