In this guide I'll talk you through how to make a cheap and easy CO2 generator for your grow room. Fermenting produces CO2 and this by product of this technique is delicious alcoholic beverages for yourself.

Since I'm a fan of alcoholic ginger beer I'll talk you through my recipe (you could make cider by swapping the ginger for apple puree, mead by using honey etc.)

Things you'll need:

5l mineral water bottle (you can pick these up cheap at your local supermarket)
40g root ginger (root works best, but you could try crystallized ginger or ginger extract)
450g sugar
25g dried yeast
*I like to add a hot chilli but this is up to you*
A clean tea towel and rubber band

Making your beer
:

  1. Grate the skin off your lemon into a mixing bowl (save the lemon)
  2. Grate the ginger root into the bowl, if your going to add a chilli slice it up well and add
  3. Boil 4.5l of your mineral water then add it the bowl, juice the lemon and add the juice also
  4. Cover the bowl and leave the liquid to cool to room temperature
  5. When the liquid is cool stir in your yeast and mix well
  6. Pour the liquid (don't strain out the bits) into your 5l water bottle, now instead of screwing the bottle lid on place your cloth over the lip of the bottle and put your elastic band around it
What next?:

There you have it! The liquid should be bubbling out CO2 strongly for 24 hours so put it in your grow room close to your plants. After 24 hours the amount of CO2 produced is much lower so you'll want to transfer the bottle to a cupboard and mix another. The liquid will have to brew for at least 2 months before it reaches its full alcoholic potential. Eventually the yeast will die when the alcohol reaches a certain level, standard baking yeast should get to 15% alcohol, brewers yeast to 18% alcohol and champagne yeast to 22% alcohol, if you want anything higher you'd have to distill. When its ready to drink strain out all the bits and leave for another 24 hours. Enjoy your booze and increased plant growth/production, thanks for reading!
