Any old controller from your local grow store should be fine.
Not really. That's the problem. Most those cheap controllers aren't meant to be used on brushless inline fans.

off topic question not even sure if this is a thing. can i salvage my carbon filter. it is a 8 inch filter and i intend on dropping down to a 4 inch extract fan is there a way i can get an adapter to go from 8 to 4 inchs and if i was to do so would there be enough pressure passing through an over sized filter
Yes. Also get a variac to control fan speed.

The larger filter on smaller fan will last longer. The variac is a variable transformer. They cost more but are easier on inline fans.

variac i was hopping someone would bring that up but to be honest after looking up the cost of one of them over a smaller fan the fan probably the better option for me considering i will hopefully not need to deal with such pressure building up in my tent as the current fan can easily destroy my tent when its on full if its 100% sealed hints the reason for limiting the speed to begin with. so running a bigger filter and smaller fan should be ok in you experience. the only thing i can imagine is that the fan will run harder then it should ??

Like I said on your profile, get a Variac, its 50 bucks. Keep your big fan and turn it down and adjust as you grow. A big fan slowed down runs a lot quieter than a small fan running full blast (usually 2800 RPM range).

Problem with a fan speed controller is you need to adjust it as the weather changes if you are drawing outside cool air. Better to put it on a thermostat and have it cycle on and off at full speed.

temp isnt really a problem for me too small a grow room and over sized fan is mine. with my current set up running a big fan on full is too much for the room to handle. the thing that i disslike is not being told by anyone that using a cheap and or incorect speed controller could be dangerous. like most people once a timer is set and everything is running fine for several moths one tends to stop checking stuff as often. i do understand electrical faults happen and can happen to any product

I got my variac for around 50 bucks. The bigger filter is actually easier on a smaller fan. As you go up in filter size it actually reduces the work load on the fan. It also has the added benefit of better smell control.

I use both a variac and a 8 inch filter on 4 inch fan.

There are a lot of people that report the inline fans working just fine on cheap controllers. I just wouldn't do as its not recommended.

i have decided on the following im a get a smaller fan and neck down to filter until i can save for a variac as i am unsure on the price difference between states but a variac is around $250 where i am located according to any google search i can do. thanks for the help with information on duct reducer . i don't think i am willing to even attempt to use a cheap speed controller ever again although this is the 1st time hearing of this happening. got to love sales people they will sell anything with out warning

Wow. What country are you in? Look up "variable transformer". Shoukdnt need one over a few amps.

The smaller fan will work as well.

Of course you could just not use a timer. I run my fan and filter round the clock.

an expensive state apparently the timer wasn't the problem it was the victim

If you want to be safer, get a contactor (its a is a big arse relay).
You get them up to sick Amp ratings, and they can be as little as $5 or less
This way your timer is never stressed.
