Yeah I use a rake at the moment. And the basterd can jump . Lol. I almost killed the fucker once.Lol
Almost nailed me in the eye.
they always go for the eyes. tennis racket is perfect. small enough to use in the enclosed space, wide enough to use as a shield, and the mesh is soft enough that it won't kill them.

i promise this is the least cruel form of self defense from psycho chicken i've ever found, lol

i keep a tennis racket hung on our coop, in case some dick want's to shank me (ie, bastard cock wants to spur the eyes). one or two swats is enough to get them growling and bitching, and generally stops the attacks for about 5-10 minutes. then, they forget and attack again. i know people say chickens are smart, but after 30 years and thousands eaten, i'm sorry to say that i just don't fucking believe that. at all, lol... they get props for creativity, but their smartness in free range means more for me to fix/clean. ours like to perch over my truck and shit on it all night, they say, ''fuck the coop, this garage is like a fucking trump penthouse!!!"
I had to kill my last cock. Got too mean. He got to where he would chase and attack the kids.

I ate that cock.

meanest cock i ever had was named 'lefty', because that was the only eye he had. mexican hatch like this...

never touched a hen, but he'd kill any cock he could get to. never lost a fight, only that right eye, lol. and the most fucked up part is he was very docile with humans. only went bat shit with other like-minded cocks...

You can trim their spurs but I like to leave them in case they need them in a fight.

Hell the one I'm talking about whipped my 60 pound boxer.
way back when one of my grandfather's killed a 65lb black labrador, a senior dog. gramps ended ALL of them and never had another chicken (mostly because they were attacking us grandkids). he decided a few peacocks would be better...

long story short, two were dead in a few days (foxes) and the one cock hit the forest and could only be seen from a distance until it too disappeared five years later.

teach your son now, and go with him to scare it. spread your arms and wear a big puffy jacket. spread the lapels like wings to increase your 'size'. this will almost always make them turn and run, and if they don't, you know what's for supper.
Anything loose or flapping or bright flip This rooster out.. I've told my boy just to say away if he's out and let us know and we'll put him back in the coupe

and post script, i cut spurs back far, but not to the quick. they grow back so damn fast it ends up being needed every other week.

the only cocks i'll run any more are foghorn leghorn style... cornish rocks, meat birds (not the greatest layers) and fucking enormous! the cocks still get cocky, and growl and rush, but stop five feet away once they realize and remember how much bigger you are than them...

never been spurred by a cornish rock after 21 years ;)

safer than sorry is always a good aproach, but if your son is old enough to hit a baseball, i'd teach him their weaknesses.

it will be a life lesson that will protect him from all chickens of all colors, large and small. not saying set him up for attack, just teach him how to defend. cocks are very predictable in the attack, which is why the tennis racket is so effective, lol.

Again, thank you.. He's in first grade. But I've been trying to man him up more. I was raised in the woods, so I teach him what I know( first hand)small farming is new to me . so it's awesome having this r.u.I. community.

I'm up in Maine, We raise between 25-50 chickens. When building your coop, I would recommend facing it south and using the clear panels for roof to get some solar gain and early morning light in the winter. I also vent the bottom with hardware cloth just below their roost to get rid of codensation. Make sure you don't get drafts with wind but you want ventilation. For winter, I would get a battery operated lantern but no heater. Put it in the coop at the end of the day and this will give you a few more hours of light then recharge it in the morning....=more eggs during winter.

i'm glad to have shared this conversation with you, makes me want to say, ''nice to meet you!'', lol.

this motley crue we take part in is very eclectic. lots of attitude, but lots of intelligence and experience too. from botanist to chemist, we have it all. we share a common passion and goal, and now that this bs election is over, we will slowly become the same old grungy riu with good and bad advice, and not very many hard feelings.

at least i hope...

If you raise your arms and stomp a foot and stare down the roo until he starts trying to change the subject on you, you will quickly see him avoiding you when you make the rounds. He is still an asshole, he just knows that I am the bigger asshole.....ps it helps to have him watch you kill a turkey or two.

Dont think he would touch anyone but me though. My kids seem safe around him.
