You know I cant think of someone on here that uses the HLG550. There must be someone. But having used 2 of the 260w kits which can run up to 285w a piece, in my 4x4, I have to say the intensity is crazy. I couldn't see an issue running them in a 4.5x4.5 at all if I could. If HLG say the 550 is a 1000w hps replacement I believe them even though I haven't seen it first hand.
Wish I could point you to a grower using one, perhaps @robincnn or @Stephenj37826 can think of a user on here who has one. If not guys you should loan one to @NapalmD or someone who loves a good test unit. I know you have newer things in the pipeline but would be good to see it done. Maybe I just missed that thread? Easy done on here. :bigjoint:
Got the 550.
It's in a friends house at mo.
I'll check it out shortly , although he has an has 600 watt in area as well.
I think the area is 42 x 46 inches.
He used to run two 600s in there

Thanks! I guess it would be nice to track down an actual 550 in work but I suppose if there are none, then any board grow will do. I just want to see how the tech works in any given space when correctly utilized and you all seem to be well versed. The pics of the various configurations I've seen in this thread are pretty impressive. Im not very savvy on all the calculations etc required for maximum usage so it's basic introduction, look and learn right now for me. I'll get around to some threads to check things out once I get more familiar with the lay of the land here. Thank you!

I don't have a current journal here. I've been a member on another board (not sure of the rules here for mentioning other sites) and have kept a journal there for a few years but I don't update near as often as I used to due to lack of traffic there these days. Once I get up and running with this set up, I'll get one going as there seems to be a bigger crowd here for this subject. I've always stayed with one forum so I guess it's time I branch out to expand my base.

Thanks again for the replies!
Will snap some more pics today which is week 6 1/2

Of all the people in all the world!!

Look forward to hearing how its doing man. :bigjoint:
I saw the hlg 550 in action.
The plants look well.
He sezs he'll let you know in 9 weeks lol

4 plants in hydro with a 100 litre res.
4 ft long x 42 inches wide x 7ft tall area.
He normally uses 2 x 600s in there.
The hlg is running at around 250 watts and the 660 hps is running at, we'll, 660 watts.
Lights are about 2ft away.
I warned him against putting it too close too soon
He is well pleased with it and will be getting one in a couple of weeks, maybe 2 of them.
I've to go over on weds to clean out the bases of the plants for him so I'll see if he'll allow me to take a couple of pics...

Awesome. He must be well chuffed if he's thinking of getting a couple. I wonder if he knows what a lucky bastard he is having a good mate like yourself letting him test one before you even plugged it in yourself. Your a better man than me! No way I would let my clown shoes mates borrow a rig like that. My generosity ends at gifting my old HPS's an old tents.

What's HPS.......? Lol

As long as it doesn't end up like the 4x4 I lent him a couple of years ago when it broke down 150 miles from home and he'd to pay 100 quid to get it towed home!
Classic.

As requested, the HLG550 in action.
4 x Sensi Star 2 plants, about 3 days into flower.
1 x HLG550 AND 1 x 660 watt , 400v HPS .
I cleaned up the bottom of plants and defoliated where necessary for him.
3 other hard-core HPSer growers had a look at setup and were we'll impressed with the QBs.
The lights are 30 inches away and he's letting the plants grow into the intense light.
Only 8 weeks 4 days to chop.
Hope this helps.

I missed the 400 watt HPS batwing at first glance. This is pretty cool temps considering there is an HPS in the tent. I would try to vent it a bit more to get the temps down a bot.
Yes..... Lol
That's because it's a 400 VOLT digital ballast with 660 watts HPS.
He is running a 5 inch extraction fan.
It's in a cupboard 4ft x 42" x 7ft tall.
He used to run 2 x 660 HPS in there with great results despite the high temps!
The good thing is that Temps here are slowly falling.
He has seen what cob lighting can do and is impressed with the quality of the finished product compared to hps.

400 volt? WTF? You are in the UK? What are you tapping power off some local electric rail line? Trainspotting again. Blimey.

Didn't you know that DE HPS operates at 400V output to the lamp? Yet another reason they're a lot more efficient when running on high input voltage circuits.
