COB/315w LEC combo

Hey guys and gals, it's been a long time since I've been able to really post anything. Here's what I'm working with now, just a personal grow for me and the ol' lady. I started a single seed in some cali connection tahoe og, a single seed in another bag of OG, and six seeds in some critical kush that were pollinated by a herm afghani. so far the tahoe and two of the critical have shown female. Space is 40"x76", but it has very little headroom, plants can only be 24-30" from the top of the soil. Not really looking forward to OGs in such a short space, but it's what I had on hand.

I started veg under 2x 20w 2' LED fixtures from lowes, they are 4000k and make 90 lumens per watt, cri is 83. After they had filled out their dixie cups, I transplanted them into 3g containers of my soil mixture and put them under a 3100k 315w sunsystem. I've got minimal work to finish light proofing the space so my plan is to get them started flowering on Monday. I'm going to re-wire my COB fixture next week and get it put in there with the 315w. Would have done it this week but I finished the vegetable garden and planted over 900 seeds for the CSA.

So here's my soil mix
1 cu ft coco
1 cu ft organic seedling soil
5 gallons coco chips
2 spent lions mane mushroom substrates
2/3 lb coarse ground wheat bran
2 cups espoma garden tone
2 cups azomite
1 cup food grade pure calcium carbonate lime (which was a big fuckin mistake using pure calcium carbonate)

So the soil mix works really well except for being magnesium deficient. I didn't really think about it when I was mixing the soil, but the calcium carbonate lime is for edible saprophytic mushrooms, which don't like magnesium. I should have picked up a bag of dolomite lol, because I could have avoided a magnesium deficiency. My tap water has too much calcium as well, so I'm diluting it 50% with distilled and adding some Epsom salt. I use botanicare pure blend pro (grow for now, will switch to bloom in flower) as a pH down, it only takes 3 mL per gallon to get the pH to ~6.6 after i dilute with distilled.

Now on to some pics, because who reads nowadays anyway? Oh, one more thing, you will probably see pictures from my mycology lab in here, so I hope you enjoy mushroom photos.

Cool! How do the COBs and the CMH bulb compare in your book? I'm curious how much more efficient in terms of PAR watts LEDs are compared to CMH.

I have two 315s, but I was thinking of going COB for the summer. Just not sure how many COB watts would replace the two 315s. Interested to see how the lights compare.

depends how hard you run them

450-500W of cob at 56% should match two 315s

Cool thread! The owner of a grow store near me said he gets a pound off one CMH315. I always liked that big one, the Grow-Beast. Doesn't make allota sense but it's cool I think. 2, 315's with a DE In the middle. Crazy fixture.
I was always told these CMH315 were only good for veg. But with the spectrum on the 3k Philips bulb I thought it would do good.
Cool to see that you're pairing it up with some COBs. Betcha this set-up does real good for you. I'm down to see! Good idea for a thread n grow!

the grow beast seems like it should either be hung extremely high,
or it is a single fixture designed to use one bulb for veg and the other
for flowering.

if you look at @GroErr 's 315w thread, you can see these things are
real monstahs in the hands of a experienced grower. i've even seen
threads where folks flower under the 4k bulbs with great results.

i really wish i had a PAR meter, i bet it's hummin' in there!

Cool, COB's, Elite Agro's and 'shrooms - subbed! ;)

Sounds like you're mixing/blending the COBs and 315's, what colour/temp are the COBs, 3500k? Whatever temp those are, that's going to be a lot of weed in a few weeks :bigjoint:

those are 4000k COBs, i chose that color because it is the most efficient
of the bridgelux vero line.

the mushroom business is doing well, the commercial space i rented should
be finished on the inside in the next week and we're gonna be doing anywhere
from 800-1000 lbs a month of lions mane and oyster mushrooms.

Cool, I had a crazy grow with some 2700k/3000k/4000k mixed in my small tent a while back, you should pull some nice bud in there, good luck!

the business got crazy for a while, but i'm back :bigjoint:

still zero maintenance on the COBs, still the original bulb in the 315w fixture, love it!
made the switch to jack's tomato feED, and it's great. i dilute my tap down to 100 ppm with distilled, add a tsp of epsom salts and a tbsp of jack's per 4 gallons

here's where we are now, strains this run are the white and king louis OG

also have a small tent going with 200w of bridgelux vero gen7
this space is larry's OG and west coast sour diesel, i had a bit of a problem
with thrips early on and you can see the damage to the leaves.

this is the second day of flowering, got the COBs re-done and the room
is staying 2-3 degrees cooler. one of the last days in veg i knocked the
fresh air fan out of the hole, so it got in the mid 90s.

Is that thing hanging one of those atomizer thingies?
Nice job! You like the cmh/cob mix better then just either or? Cmh's are the shit!
I see you use Jacks too. Six, Zep & a few others use it to w/ great results. I'm about to give it a shot soon myself.
Good work!

that's a wireless temperature/humidity gauge, hung from the side of the 315w.

i do like the combo better than plain COB, i'm seeing better density running 20w/sq ft
in the combo room than the COB only tent at 25w/sq ft. i think the IR actually helps a
bit (functions similar to a catalyst in chemistry) when everything else is optimally healthy,
that's why greenhouses grow so well. not to mention the bump in far red that the LEC
puts out.

which jack's are you gonna try? i'm really liking the tomato feed in soil, but i'm fairly sure it
has too much ammonia for hydroponics.

here are some just before chop shots

the white's got a serious lean going on, and dense as hell

king louis og, she looks like she's gonna YIELD. stayed really short for an OG, and i tried
growing her with 1,3,5, and 8 colas, all of them look like they're gonna put out some weight.

Nice! Frosty fuckers! Not sure which Jacks, I'll be asking Six. He's got it down.
CMH's a great light. Their spectrum is the reason they can outperform a 600w HPS.
Good work!
I think mixing the 2 is what cobs need. Or to be Enhanced w/ monos.
Good job!

Love maitake. What medium do you grow those in?

This year has been completely bananas (and late) for chanterelles. Foraged 15# last weekend in 5 mins. Cant wait for morels...should be an awesome year.
