I had to cannibalize the hard drive
LOL, that was a little humorous for me since I just finished tearing down close to 100 of them. Now I have a pile of platters, Neodymium (rare earth) magnet, gold, silver, platinum. I sold all the aluminum already.

Just out of curiosity, did you have to replace the PSU in your cube really early in the game. Mine did not last 3 months.

No it still works. I never did anything real crazy with it. The card reader stopped working pretty early though.

I wanted to choke someone when they changed my operating software without me knowing it.
If it is any consolation, you can backup your data and reinstall Windows 7, IF your computer has a sticker with the C.O.A. For people who does not have an installation disc, they are easy to come by.

I have a few dozen of those, be happy to send you one if you like, as opposed to sending it to landfill. Let me know.
I'm a mini PC shop.
I got boxes full of CPU's, heat sinks, closet full of cases etc. Somebody always wants a cheap PC, easy extra coin.

Same here. It seems to have so little worth now compared to the hours required to get it in good selling condition that I have torn most every desktop down to sell for precious metals. Now I have to go at the laptops, I must have 30+ now.

I get 250$ for a desk top @;4 GB RAM with a amd double or quad core, 40-80 GB HDD.

Then on-site tech repair fees of 35hr plus parts.

I target businesses that need to get off XP systems etc for that one. Then sell boxes to needy folks @ 150 for a decent you ain't running AutoCAD desktops.

That is pretty decent for what you offer. The biggest obstacle was always the extra coin for a valid Windows license. Since I was running a business it is not like I could start selling pirated versions. I did much better selling computers with Linux on them, no license issues.

And I charged $30-60/hr + $25 for a service call. Businesses that want me to carry them while they get around to sending a cheque definitely paid more.

But now I am mostly retired and only do odd jobs for long time clients. As a result I am mostly bored now. Anyone needs computer help? Free of course.

OEM windows bundle was/is 49$

Sell them info sec course for employees and management. Teach them counter hacking technique. Businesses need that more than PCs. I have seen it works for one of my clients got hit with a few phishermen and they avoided issues by remembering my course. Made me feel like, yeap they listen. Didn't help with huge attack surface of out dated wares and wide open network.

Info sec related sheet is my other hobby.

Nice! I had a lots of clients ask me about all kinds of courses, but I really had no location to run them in and renting a space seemed to expensive. I always gave the clients as much info as they could take, but most of them just kind of start getting that glazed look in their eyes after a very short time. I really felt bad for clients that fell for the fishing scams, but the worst one was $800. At least they did not lose their life savings or have their identity stolen.
