curious, does the mogul sockett need a ground?

my current mogul outlet has no gorund. just 2 wires heading out to an enconmy ballast I got on ebay. I wanna upgrade to a 600. I see that most cords that are cheapest or inlcuded just come with 3 wires on the receptalc end. I assume 1 is pos 1 is neg and 1 is a ground?\

Could i just wire the 2 pose and neg to my 2 wire mogul and leave the ground dangling?

Also if i did this would a digital lumatek ballast even fire since it had though sensors?

I am thinking I could just buy a 25 dollar recpetacle with a mogul sockett attached and wre that to my currnet hood and save the trouble but i wondering anyway.

Also do the new 6oo wtt lumatek ballasts have any rf problems. If so I dont care enough about power to need the digi then. Also does any one know if it is reliable or will it break right off the bat. I know that mag netics can last 40 years or so.

WHat digi ballasts are good?

ty for any repsonses.:fire:

Well, we're dealing with AC electricity so in actual fact, one wire is "hot", one wire is "neutral" and the other wire (The round prong on the plug) is "ground".

You could, but it isn't advisable due to the fact that if your ballast had a short you could get electrocuted. The ground is there for your safety.

My guess is it probably would fire, though I haven't tried it myself so I don't know for sure.

For the sake of a measly $25, I would.

I have two 600w Lumatek ballasts and haven't experienced any RF problems to date and I have two computers that run within 10 feet of the ballasts. In terms of reliability, I've had mine for over a year with no problems at all. I can't really comment on the long term reliability of the ballasts as I haven't had them long enough to know for sure.

What I can vouch for? Comparing my two Lumatek's to my old 600w Magnetic I can tell you that the Digi's produce noticably brighter light than the magnetic ballast, and it only takes about 2 minutes for the light to reach full brightness as opposed to the magnetic which took between 5 to 10 minutes to reach full brightness. The digi's are also quieter than the magnetic (actually they are completely silent). The digi's also have a bunch of safety features as well like short protection and over current protection which could prevent a fire which is very important.

My recommendation would be to get the proper GROUNDED mogul socket and get the 600w Lumatek, if not for the obvious benefits of digi, than just for the peace of mind in knowing you have a safe setup that will practically eliminate the possibility of a fire or electrocution which makes it more than worth the cost in my opinion.
