You're pushing a very high PPfd level. How are your plants liking it?
I dont think Im pushing them that hard. They are still over 51% efficient. I think around a 1000 PPFD is where ya wanna be.
They do freak out if I dont work them up to the full power. I have been lazy lately and running them full power this last run and just putting them up higher and let the plants stretch up to them. They adjust to it as they grow up to it. Then I keep it right around 12" Closer if my canopy is nice and even.

I get your point why you say 'top bin 3590 is about 6% more efficient than the 3070' at 1.4amps. 56.34 - 50.77 =5.57%~ 6%
What do you think of this POV with bigger numbers...
Just like if 3070 was 40$ and 3590 was $50. I would say 3590 is 25% more expensive than 3070. Or 3070 is 20% cheaper than 3590.

Question: CXB 3590 is how much ________% more efficient than CXB 3070 ?
Answer (56.34 - 50.77 ) /50.77 ) = 10.97%

Question: CXB 3070 is how much _______% less efficient than CXB 3590 ?
Answer (56.34 - 50.77) /56.34) = 9.89%


In that example I would say that CXB3590 is 5.57% more efficient but that it makes 11% more light/W. 11% is the important number because the efficiency increase is relative. In other words, assuming power dissipation was equal, you could expect 10-11% more bud.



I know this isnt what your cost example was for, but for posterity sake, when comparing cost of COBs it is important to focus on the cost/PAR W. For example, if 44% was your efficiency goal for a 3500K setup:
CXB3590 cost $1.06/PAR W
CXB3070 cost $1.09/PAR W
Vero29 cost $1.29/PAR W

A more extreme example to make the point, if 56% was your efficiency goal for a 3500K setup:
CXB3590 cost $1.73/PAR W
CXB3070 cost $2.42/PAR W
Vero29 cost ~$12.00/PAR W

That really changes the picture and we might miss that by focusing on the cost of the COB itself.

I gotta give a shout out to @SupraSPL thanks for the Apogee error corrections and here's what I did

6500k Veg tent CXB3590 DD optic 500ma 180 watts
36"=340.8
24"=543.53
12"=1063.01
6" =290=1394.9

flower tent 3500k CD optic 700ma dimmed 186 watts
12"=1094.8
6" =320=1523.2

flower tent 3000k & 5000k mixed CD 700ma dimmed 186 watts
12"=840
6" =298=1430.4

flower tent 3000k CD 700ma dimmed 186 watts
12"=766.36
6" =1466.08

Can't wait until I test my 3500k CD bin tomorrow due to cleaning the 4x8 tent lol.

Edit: I forgot to mention they are 72v.

I have made my lights from both of those:

Here they are:

10x cxb3070 AD 3000k ~ 2x HLG-185-1050C Designed for a 2x4 space

365 (dissipation W) * .5128 (COB efficiency) = 187 PAR W
187 PAR W/8 ft² = 23.4 PAR W/ft²
23.4 * 10.7 (ft² in 1 m²) = 250 PAR W/m²
250 * 4.88 (umol/PAR W for CXA 3000K) = 1220 PPFD.

390 (dissipation W) * .5167 (COB efficiency) = 202 PAR W
202 PAR W/8 ft² = 25 PAR W/ft²
25 * 10.7 (ft² in 1 m²) = 267.5 PAR W/m²
267.5 * 4.88 (umol/PAR W for CXA 3000K) = 1305 PPFD

I would guess it comes down to matching your spacing of cobs and how well they match the driver you have them paired with to achieve the output and efficiency you want.
With the 3070s ~ 5 will fit on a Meanwell 185 driver
With the 3590 ~ 4 will fit.

So I would figure out how much PPFD you want to put down and how many and what spacing of your cobs will max out your divers to match that.

For example as to why I/myself like the 3590s. The 3590s are great for over a square foot.
My space is 4x2. With a Cob centered over each square foot. 8² = 8 Cobs. 4 Cobs on a HLG-185-1400 is a great match and put out the PPFD and the efficiency I want with a perfectly even cob spacing.

My 3070 light does close to the same PPFD and effiency except I have to use 10 of them. By using 10, I have to go with 2 rows of 5 soooo . That is not a perfect spacing on a 4x2 area. (but still works great.and so run about 30 watts and 100 PPFD less) Each 3070 is covering a 9.6" x 12" Space ( 115.2 in² ) 115.2 is 10.73 squared.
If your space is 53.6" x 21.4" (10.73 in a 5x2 pattern) then the 3070s would be the better choice.

Like Alesh said apples to apples. Its your space and design that will determine the right cob for your space. What is your grow area dimensions and how much PPFD and efficiency do you want?

hi im getting buildt a growlight With 6 cree cxb 3070 3000k ad bin these days along With 72 pcs Osram ssl80 top bins With my own selected ratios and so on, but im having following 3 driver options at the moment and i want the highest efficiancy rather, so please help me see the efficiancy differenece With 870mA, 1050mA and 1300mA on 6 x ad bin 3000 k cxb 3070 as mentioned above.

if youre going to take the time to use top bin diodes, you should prob use modern cobs

3070s are pretty dated

i know 3590 has higher bin and minimal higher efficiancy and the New 200 w cxb i got ooffered from kingbrite higher bin than 3590 again so i dont know what you are talking about.
im using top bin Osram ssl 80 wich probably is the best and highest efficiancy colored leds along With luxeon rebel es royal blue top bin and rare deep red 670nm luxeoen rebel.

and if you mean cxb 3070 are dated then my cree cxa 2530 cobs in another light i have and that along With only epistar, yet it gave me 417g dry from 405w light in 81 days from 3 Dutch passion autos (auto Colorado cookie x 2 and 1 x auto blackberry kush in a 3 x 3 or actually 1 meter x 1 meter tent.
so i bet i will get atleast 1,5gram pr watt or more With ssl 80 and cxb 3070 cobs

thats fine, were all expecting 10+ years out of our cob rigs im just saying if buying new chips today there are better options. same performance for half the price of either 3590 or 3070 which are coming up on 2 years old soon

Please excuse my n00bery in advance:

1) Is this comparing the new Gen 7 Vero 29 to the tried-and-true Crees?

2) Does this post mean to suggest that the only realistic contender for PAR W efficiency is the CXB3590?

I have already got myself some heatsinks for the Vero 29, so I am stuck with that choice... at this point I'm just curious.
