Democrat, Anthony Rendon, just shelved single-payer in California

"Rendon announced late Friday afternoon that the bill, Senate Bill 562 by state Sens. Ricardo Lara (D-Bell Gardens) and Toni Atkins (D-San Diego), would not advance to a policy hearing in his house, making it all but certain the measure will not be acted upon this year.

“SB 562 was sent to the Assembly woefully incomplete,” Rendon said in a statement. “Even senators who voted for SB 562 noted there are potentially fatal flaws in the bill, including the fact it does not address many serious issues, such as financing, delivery of care, cost controls, or the realities of needed action by the Trump administration and voters to make SB 562 a genuine piece of legislation.”"

Tell me more about how Democrats support single payer...

who voted for it is very relevant to who supports it. care to post the voting record?
Rendon doesn't support it. He's a Democrat. He single handedly halted the progress of single payer in CA. It wasn't because of Republicans, it was because he doesn't support it.

I find that reasonable

looks like it passed on party lines, with every democrat voting for and every republican voting against.

wooops, one democrat voted against.

so democrats supported single payer 23-1, republicans opposed 13-0

i guess democrats do support single payer.

Why the fuck wouldn't you want Universal Health Care? Health insurance should be a fundamental right, and most developed, first world countries pretty much look at us as unevolved and behind the times because we don't have single payer health care. Have you checked your doctor's bill? Ever see what they charge you for an IV of electrolyte fluid? It's pretty fucking ridiculous. Medical care shouldn't be about turning a profit, especially turning a profit over the focus of providing health care and improving the quality of life.

I don't even know why the GOP is allowed to exist. It's pretty clear their sole purpose is to rob and cheat their constituents and make a profit off of the death and suffering of the lower class. They literally just wrote a health care bill in secret to try to do just that. How much more evidence do you need to see they aren't public servants, and are in fact, corporate traitors?

You have to be literally retarded or part of the wealthy elite to vote for your own blatantly obvious enslavement. Did you see the GOP used a SuperPAC to smear a Republican Congressman in Nevada for not supporting the bill? Why the fuck is that kind of subversion and paid propagandist advertising legal in a first world country, and why is it employed against its own citizens?

The GOP clearly only see their constituents as a means to an end, NOT as the People whose will they are to serve. You are a fucking dollar sign to the Republican Party.

Em...

Did you not read his reasoning for the decision?

Thoughts on Rendon blocking the bill?
I'm a bystander here. I don't have an oar in water. I don't live in CA or have anybody that I care for living there.

OTH, I'll follow what's going on in CA on this issue because it's important.

The bill as described seems to be deliberately incomplete. What I read was this is because the bill had to move out of the Senate by June 2. If I had to put my name on a piece of legislation, I'd want to know more about how it will be funded. There is this issue of a 400 billion price tag and no agreement on how to fund it. Yeah, I can see why the speaker of the house might want to see more work done on the bill.

Support among Democrats is strong. No way it would have gotten this far without it. The next step is to work on the bill and flesh out the details. If so, who is slated for that job?

Or are you just going to carp about corrupt democrats and the one Democrat who didn't oppose the measure, but pointed out the obvious and said "fix this"?

The devil is in the details. Sure, I support the idea of single payer or universal healthcare coverage. Recall the mess made when the administration botched the roll out of health care exchanges. The scandal was one of the major contributors to Republican wins in the 2014 elections. Of course they helped make that mess but the egg was on Democratic leadership faces and the Democratic party was tarred for that mess. As a result the 24 million people who should be planning for better things are now at risk of losing health care coverage. The details matter.

So, yeah, California, get the ball rolling, get the debate moving and follow up with a solid, responsible, well thought out plan. it would be a bad joke on everybody who supports this idea if Democrats passed a 400 billion dollar health care bill without a thought of how to pay for it. That sounds more like something Republicans would do. Of course, their MO is always to remove billions from public spending without a thought of what the results would be. I guess it's easier to thoughtlessly remove funding than to thoughtfully redirect spending to a better healthcare system.

I want to see a single payer system as much as anyone, but I also want them to get it right the first time. Imagine the fodder it would give Trump to point to if it crashes and burns?

If his opposition to this is genuine, I don't mind them tapping the brakes a bit and getting everything sorted out...
