Determining factor in yeild?? Nutes or lights?

I understand that there are many factors that must be considered for growing big plants, temps, co2, lighing, ph, mediums, hydro/soil ect ect ect.
What would you say the most important factor is from going from a punny little plants to a Monster of a plant:

Lighting
Nutrients

Basicly, would a 400watter with a great nutrient base (ppm 1700) grow bigger then a 1000watter with much less nutrients (ppm 500)

Lights! The plant can only use nutrients in line with how much light it gets, so light intensity has to come first. In the example you cite, the plants would have no chance to take advantage of the extra nutrients. And while you may produce two buds of similar volume under 400 and 1000, the one grown under 1000 will be more dense, so more actual yield.

That said, I've seen a lot of massive nugs here grown under 400W so, if that's what you have, don't feel a need to run out for 1000 unless you really want to expand your grow space.

I have gotten great results from my 400HPS. When I was using 2 150HPS they grew tall and lanky. With my 400 I am getting much more solid nuggs. I must admit that I really want to bump up to a 650 and get a conversion bulb for the 400 to use for veging.
