"1000w 400v HPS has 2000 umoles/j" yes, directly under the bulb maybe. But due to the circular radiation pattern, up to 30% of that is gone to reflector losses whereas with led the light is all aimed downward at up to at most, a 120 degree spread. Less light wasted.

And take a look at the trends going on in the DIY area. People seem to be having some hella good grows from LOW wattage LED lighting. Seems to me maybe we are all missing something here. I think its time to put away all the math and theory and start looking closer at what we are growing with these lights. I'm following a guy on another forum who I suspect will exceed 2gpw in a 4'x4' space with just 4 cobs running at 55 watts each. Final results should be in soon. I'm of the opinion the part of COB success is superior light quality.
Winner winner. I am running four of his lights in a 3x3 now as well and so far so good can't believe what I am seeing thus far with such low wattage. Will be an interesting grow for sure. But the QB is in the other tent too and I'm sure it won't disappoint.

thats not what a sphere is used for though a flat plane par map could demonstrate this. i dont think theres much difference beyond 12-18 inches for the usual array of 50W cobs
Wandering thought, is this a disadvantage for led? Being a 2d source vs a 3d traditional lamp. Also thinking about chip die spacing and qb emmiter spacing, would it be a closer comparison if the distance from sensor were proportionaly equal to this spacing? Or at a distance that would closely duplicate a given distribution area? Then what? I'd ask if the qbs can be bent or shaped to mimic a 3d source? Why? Seems like we live in a 3d world.

i did a QB test in the sphere (which was weird trying to compare a qb to a cob due to the different format factor -with the size of the sphere the cob tests are usually single chip outside of the sphere shining into it- i ended up mounting a clu048 ideal holder on the back of the QB, using the QB as the heatsink, and flipping it over to test- in other words the board was still inside the sphere absorbing photons).

i did some low current tests and with the old S5 boards it took an estimated 3 cxm22 or 5 gen5 1212s to match it, as a caveat the first graph is real data the second is calculated by multiplying the cob curve wattage by 3 and 5 respectively to represent multiple chips :

on chip cost performance cobs win but theres cost of heatsinks to consider as well which can tip the scale in QB favor. this was as far as i got when i heard the S6 in QBs were coming out i gave up on testing. a fair test would be to use the same slate heatsink and mount 5 or 6 1212 gen 6 on it and map out a tent test vs S6 QB (and any other board comers). cobs were def at a thermal disadvantage in this test using the thin QB board itself as a heatsink... both cobs and QBs would perform better on a slate but how much better for each remains to be seen
On paper, the gen7 v22C appears to be the best deal for running @ low current.... Have you got any of them to test with?

Any idea how many diodes are on the chili PCB? Looks like alot I'm also curious how big that board is. The cover chili has for the PCB is really cool aswell.

Guess I shoulda looked closer lol. Well there are worse scenarios. Like having a bunch of tools you don't know how to use nor have the time. Trying to stay true to DIY requires much more than just your valuable time.

not yet. that vero calculator is screwy. at really low currents it returns 300+ lm/W and other nonsense. most cobs tend to converge at low currents by my experience
Gotcha - I'll look forward to seeing where it diverges from the calc... @ 500ma, the XLS says it can do 194 lm/w (3000K 80CRI 40 C)... with my cheapo lux meter, it compares favorably to the QB running at the same amperage. Actually, I guess I should go look up your charts for the Vero 29 gen7 as it should be close in terms of point of divergence.

i personally think the dies arent all that different from mfr to mfr. the special sauce is in thermal management which is why you see chips pulling away/falling off at higher currents

beyond that its just economics:
# of dies per package
package size for dissipation
cost per package

QBs are great because they are essentially maxi cobs where each die has room to breathe, and not be as negatively thermally affected by its neighbors

I'm new to LED in general, but after being amazed by the QBs I picked up a Citizen 1212. With a driver I pulled from a Mars Hydro i'm running that chip @24 watts in a 4 sq ft space, 3 ft clearance. Ive been watching closely for stretch on the seedlings and I see none. No leaning towards the light with the seedlings near the walls at all. Its only been two weeks my T5s did not perform this well especially at this height. I'm not sure about the performance of the driver tho, but the plants seem to be doing quite well.

Ya I looked at all that I thought maybe I missed something. I'm sure all the info will be out soon. I'm curious how efficient they are compared to the qp they use the same diodes if there are more of them per PCB I imagine it would be worth the increase in price. But much harder to diy than these QB.
