Hello all

I got a setup with a 400w sylvania growlux HPS. I was wondering if i need a contactor in order not to burn my timer? The timer i use says it can take up to 3680watt @ 230v.

Thanx for any answers in advance guys and girls :)

you can get some timers that are rated at 400W, but make sure it can handle it. Any more than 400W and you def need a contactor. The timer turns on the contactor and then the contactor turns on your lights. I have always used one for my HPS. Saftey first, plus there is much less chance of your timer blowing and fucking with you light schedule. Not good!!

I use a timer from HD its a 15amp power bar with a digital timer built in that operates 4 out of the 8 outlets .... it cost like 15 bucks in ontario

thank you Esso. Unfortunately where i live i gotta make the wiring myself since we dont have such neat stuff like a premade contactor :( . Anyways, many electricians told me that my timer is heavy stuff and it is very unlikely i'll have any problems whatsoever, and since i cant wire a contactor, i'll risk operating without one.

my timer came with my light and does specifically say it will work with my light wattage (400w) but THX a bunch for the heads up on this... ill keep it in mind if i ever use a different timer.

A contactor could save the light and ballast over a period of time. It will take the initial stress of the in rush current causing less stress to the fixture wiring, xfmr and bulb. The choice is yours. If you can afford to do it--do it.
