I’m not a 100% sure if your just putting it over the top would only work to keep away nats for overwatering purposes i usually mix it in my soil ... If I’m not mistaken U want 25-35 % aeration in your soil for proper drainage..... They look healthy at the moment but when u transplant to a bigger pot put u some perlite and in my opinion get u a smart pot “cloth” to prevent root issues..On my first grow I used plastic pots and had a ton of issues in flower the smart pots helped me a lot when I switched .... Also in your second pic it looks to be stretching a bit u might wanna get your lights a little closer to prevent them from stretching too much....How many watts of cfl’s do u have????

Thanks for all the tips. I have gone a purchased a potting mix and pertile. I was advised to put plants in potting mix and sprinkle pertile on the top which I have now done. The stretched one was from different lights I first had but that’s all sorted now

yes it is healthy, yes perlite needs mixed with the soil to reap its drainage benefits
smart pots will not prevent root rot. they do make it harder to overwater because they do dry out faster, however it is still very possible to get the rot
