Electrical Wiring Question About Lights

I'm setting up a grow box with CFL's. I'm thinking about a 2x6 board with four porcelain sockets wired together in a series with a common electrical plug. This plug would go into a power strip. When I flip the power strip on, all four 100 watt CFL's come on.

And what about if I had 8 sockets/CFL's at 50 watts each...?

Is there any fire hazard or electrical overload issue I should be considering here? Do I need an industrial type cord or will a standard lamp cord suffice? Its been many years since I did any electrical wiring and I really don't want a house fire to bring me back up to speed...

If you must do it that way, wire each light with a pigtail.

this prevents you from having two wires going into each socket, as you meant series

Google pigtail wiring for a better understanding of what I mean.

But it would better if each light had its own powercord and you could use splitters.

Although not nessecary and pigtail wiring would be fine.
