electricity usage: 8 cfl's vs 400w hps?

my first grow was cfl, i am trying to see if i can muster a significantly bigger yield by considering switching to a 400w, and how much difference if any the electricity would be.

i dont have the offhand rating for the cfl's, but i am using 8 and they are decent wattage for CFL.

With the CFL's you'll use less electricity and veg just as good as the 400. However, it's common knowledge that the 400watt HPS is much better fpr flowering. I've grown some good bud with CFL's but my advice to you is to take that $150.00 and go to High Tech Garden Supply and order yourself a 400. Good luck.

Even if your CFL's were the 42 watters --- 42 x 8 = You're burning 336 watts for 21,600 lumens

With the 400 you're getting 155,000 lumens off of 400 watts.

400 watt lights are not 155,000 lumen's...and your bill will only increase by about 20 bucks max....

^^yeh i agree!you could possibly get a hid that takes both mh and hps but coz youve got cfl's already you might aswell use them for vegging instead!

so if 400 watts makes 155,000 lumens, then one would thikn twice the watts=twice the lumen output right? guess not. so would it not be more cost and lumen effetive to have two 400 watters right next to each other, or do you think the concentration power of the 1000 makes the difference.

HEy there man, it costed me for 4 x 400W HPS - 6 Months - 2 Bills Each 3rd Month

It costed me about 135 Dollars.... So thats about 300 dollars....

I havnt used them since and my bill was way lower, got myself some new stuff with that money....

As soon as my WW has finish'd i will have my own opinion on wich is better !

CFL's OR HPS ..... :) obvious now... but i'm looking at it in a diffrent way...

peace

Yo I was thinkin..(warning this may be a stoned idea) With the energy you would save in electricity over two years will prolly afford you whichever ballin HPS system you desire. should you decide after two years you made the wrong choice.... if you had just bought HPS to begin with... you would end up spending the price of the CFL's in extra energy... soo...

With CFL's:

Money earned + Money saved on electricity + CFL purchase = free HPS after 2 years.
With HPS:
Hps cost = money saved on electricity + HPS purchase + having No Cfl's

again... I am high... but it seems like application of microeconomics works well here... You dont only pay Purchase price... you also pay for what you Dont get. See what I mean?

You will lose way more in yield than you will save in electricity.
