Entering the world of horticulture.. and a vast world it is.

*This is all theoretical and based on a slew of potential "if" situations. I will never, and have never grown or consumed cannabis.

Hello RIU!

I've been researching growing my own cannabis for years now. Through High Times magazine, other magazines, and mostly the internet. The information out there is astounding. Some of it correct, most of it incorrect (although this is only what I've read). After years of wasting money on low-grade overpriced junk on the streets, and more importantly, compromising the security of myself and my family (I won't go into details on that) through the means of purchasing, transporting, and consumption, I've decided (along with my wife) it would be much more cost-effective and safe for our lives.

The Boring Introduction:

I have carpal tunnel syndrome and it's effecting my life daily. Sometimes the pain is so severe I can't use my hands to open a 20 oz bottle of soda (although I do normally prefer water over soda). I work and have worked in industries where my hands are by far my most necessary tools. Repeating motions with my hands are basically a must to sustain a life for myself and my family. I'm 25 years old so the problem will only get worse as time goes on.

Although I'm sure cannabis isn't going to help better than surgery, any chance to postpone such undue stress to my body (yes, much like this wonderous vegetation) is VERY much an interest of mine. I can tell a difference in the pain and tingling sensation in my hands even from smoking some funky schwag, though the effects seem to last a lot LESS time than with some higher grade hydroponic or even well-grown soil buds with real genetics. My father suffers from the same although he has severe insomnia and his CPS has taken him from 60% control and feeling in his hands to just 1% in his left hand and 2% in his right hand over the past few years. He has had multiple surgeries and has taken literally hundreds of different pharmaceuticals to try and combat this. Sleeping pills NEVER help him, and pain killers just make him edgy emotionally and hard to be around when he is low on supply (I wouldn't take him as an addict though as I can easily get them from people I know, he refuses.). My grandmother has severe rheumatoid arthritis and is going to lose her eyesight within the year due to bleeding of her retina and cataracts. She has been on board for trying marijuana for a long time but with the area we live in (OH) she doesn't have an option besides to find something on the street. She also tried smoking which I wouldn't recommend at her age, I am going to purchase a vaporizer for her and make some edibles as well. She also is very uneducated on the subject as she would try to smoke a joint at once if that's what you gave her. I'm a firm believer in people receiving medicinal benefits when consuming in moderation (2 or 3 hits then wait 30-40 minutes to see how you feel).

Growing up I smoked like an idiot. An ounce a day wouldn't satisfy the needs of myself and 2 or 3 friends (and most of those people still smoke like that to this day). I prefer to smoke half a bowl at a time or less, 1 to 3 times daily at the most as it is actually possible to function throughout the day as a normal human being. I prefer to get mellow and reduce the pain in my hands when I smoke now, not get stupid wasted and have no idea what my next step is.

The Growing Conditions:

Ideally, 1.5-2 oz of dry weight per growing cycle is my goal. I have a PC grow case (ugh, yes... I know. But this is best for my present and future living situation until medicinal is legalized in OH). I consumed around 1 oz or less a month of crappy throat hurting street "herb". So to be on the safe side I'd like to have the same of some high grade, growing medium controlled dank that I could keep around for medicating and relaxation purposes when the day is slowed down or free to expand my mind.

The PC case is 26.5"Hx8.1"Wx18.6"D (Yes, the MrGrowPro case, don't hate, it's convenient). I have the hydro setup but it doesn't have to be hydro, it just seems a lot more convenient for my situation. It comes with CFLs but if these are really a downer to my potential, I can upgrade to something else, I just prefer the convenience of not having to rewire or mount anything new. I love the idea of how the system still sounds like a PC with CFLs instead of adding an HPS or HID and having a strange hum or buzz coming from my box. I'm a computer junkie so the
case as is fits right in with all the spare parts I have laying around the house.

That being said, I'm running with the potential of 1-3 plants per growing cycle. Autoflower seems like it would be best suited for my operation. But right now this is just speculation. Keeping a mother and/or clones isn't an option. Going to a larger medium is also not an option. I can do 2 plants in hydro or 3 in soil but I prefer hydro as messing with soil different bags of soil and fertilizers could potentially hinder my stealth ops. I will be ordering the seeds myself and I prefer to use fem seeds as opposed to regular, it just doesn't seem efficient to order a 10-pack of seeds and risk only getting 1 or 2 ladies when I could order a 10-pack of femmed and only risk 1 or 2 herms. I have a very dear and close friend who has his own op going but in a much different growing medium (closet with I believe 600-W HPS) and a larger hydro system, he also has some soil women in the closet as well. He's having great success, his last lady (Woompa I believe) is going to be around 6 oz of dry weight. So I can go to him for a lot of my questions, but he's not a seasoned horticulturalist and also not experienced in micro grows, hence my coming here.

I can do soil or hydro, I can do 1-3 plants, I can and will LST. I can upgrade the lighting later on but from what I've researched, the CFLs in this small box seem to be sufficient. The only thing with the lighting, is it must be almost no noise what so ever. I can do regular or autoflower strains.

I will not start my grow until the beginning of April.

My Questions:

Can I reach my yield goals of 1.5-2oz per 2 months using this size growing medium?

Will autoflower strains survive in the hydro unit that comes with the case? If so, will I be able to reach my yield goal using hydro with autoflower?

I know autoflower strains are generally new and inconsistent, but which strains are known to have the highest yield?

I've read that you can cycle plants on 12/12 with regular strains from seed to harvest. Is this an option using my grow medium?

If I go with regular strains as opposed to autoflower, will the difference in yield make up for the time lost in the growing cycle?

I'm sure I have a few hundred more questions, but right now I can't think very clearly (No, I'm not smashed. I've stopped smoking until my first harvest. Which is seemingly 5-6 months away)

In advance, thanks to everyone that posts on here and other forums. Thanks to seasoned veterans and newbies alike. Thanks to anyone that responds to this or any other post I might make (And you can bet I will start a very consistent PC grow journal once my adventure begins.)

Cheers.

*note* I don't know how the hell my thread went from regular to having half of the shit centered. Sorry, it hurts my brain as well.

Some strains I was/am interested in as far as autoflowers are considered. Afghan Kush Ryder (due to THC content, this seems like something to knock my pants off later in the evening or when I have nothing on my plate for the next 4 hours) Auto AK from Grass-O-Matic (Because how the hell can you go wrong with some prize winning AK-47?) Auto Lemon or Auto Lemon Skunk (Because Lemon Skunk was by far the best tasting bud I've smoked to date. Not to say I've smoked a hundred different strains of the good stuff, it was just astoundingly delicious) and Big Devil (Seems like it has a good yield and is normally a larger plant).

Although, I'm open to opinions/experiences.

Some other things I've been considering...

A perpetual grow system. Using strictly autos. I would do 1 or 2 plants at a time. 4 or 5 weeks into the growth cycle, introduce a second batch (another 1 or 2 plants) to start their growth cycle. After the first 2 are ready for harvest (approx 4-5 weeks from introducing the 2nd 2 plants) I would introduce a third batch in to start their growth cycle. Dry for 2 weeks, cure for 2 weeks, and start a fourth batch. By this time the 2nd batch would be harvested and going to dry and cure, and the 3rd batch would be moving to the mid-way point of their cycle.

Ideally, 1 oz per batch of dank ladies would come of this every 4 or 5 weeks. Again, this is ideally.

But I'm assuming there wouldn't be a way to have 4 hydro going at a time, so I might be forced to drive the soil route (which isn't a downside, just adds work).

This is an idea and also an example of the types of ideas I'm looking for.

Overall I want to utilize my PC to grow in and produce an oz of dry weight every month, or 1.5-2 per 2-2.5 months. I prefer to go hydroponic over soil, but I won't completely denounce the soil medium for my op.
