Epson Salt and PPM question.

ok, I have got some plants that are showing the classic signs of N and Mag difficiencies. I have fixed my ph and to keep it as controled a possible was adjusting it down to 5.8 after every watering so it would be set for the next one. I was running 1/4 strength nutes, and the plants are 5-6 weeks now.

I have been folier spraying epson salt and water for about 3 days, and other than making them look droopy it has only stopped them from looking more yellow, but I am noticing the older leave are drying right up and dying.

I have fairly hard water as it is, but with the 1/4 strength nutes I can keep the PPM around 400-500. I was reading the FAQ's and there was a section on Mag dif and they said you could mix epson salt 1/4 tablespoon per gallon in your res for watering and it would help keep it in check. I am getting ready to do a res change tonight, so I mixed up a gallon of water with 1/4 TBS epson salt, and full strength nutes.. ph'ed it to 5.8 and checked the PPM ... I'm thinking 1800 is a little high.

Am I outta wack and that's actually ok or what? I have read 700-800 for vegging plants.. so I dunno.:wall:

I use tap water as I do think the extra minerals etc are good for the plants so I'm not ready to run out and buy distilled water or a RO system.

Oh, and the reason I only mixed up a gallon instead of the whole res, if I'm changing it out is because I am jumping from 1/4 strength nutes - that they were on to recover from previous damage.. right into a difficiency problem.. so I was going to hand water today and change the res tonight after the final feeding.. but I'm only testing out the high nutes with insane PPM on a few of the plants to see if it kills them... I know a shitty way to look at it, but I've got all the other variables (PH, PPM, light, heat, humidity, fans etc) all tuned into acceptible if not optimal ranges. So all I can think of is that it's not getting what it needs at all at 1/4 strength, and a buddy was telling my that may have alot to do with my ph fluctuation too. He suggested at 6 weeks I had to go full strength because the plants are needing it to maintain itself. He basically said it's pulling the nurishment out of the leaves it already grew to sustain the new growth coming in.. is that accurate? He told me the issues should sort themselves out...the only problem is I had a different friend tell me to nute from seed. Well there was a nute chart for seedlings and clones.. so I thought ok, he's right, it says it on the bottle.. why question it right?...

ya, almost killed the poor little things.
So I thought I would test it and ask at the same time. I have only fed full strength once so far, want to watch it and see if I can notice a difference at all.. good or bad, and I can flush it immediately if it's bad.

Any input or insight on the situation would be appreciated...Thanks in advance for any advice.
