you can get a window unit and build a box for it. the box would need an exhaust (to carry the heat out) and a drain pan (for the condensation). ac would look like normal inside the grow room.

Cant be window unit, there is no window. That is why I stated "Portable unit". Need quiet. Why do people not understand the need for total silence or close to it? Cant have new sounds blazing about like fans and motors. It is called stealth. I can build things to help quiet things like an inline fan but you really must start with as quiet as you can go with everything and that includes I am hoping, the portable ac???

if you're going to be an asshole you can count on getting little to no help... o.0

you can have a window unit INSIDE THE HOUSE with no window. by building a box with an exhaust vent, heat from the ac is vented out. the pan in the bottom catches the water, and if you're smart, you can run a line down to your res to collect the distilled water. if you use a window ac (the new ones are quiet! wow!!) inside a box, you're not going to hear it. after all, it's not a central air unit, it's a window unit.

portable ventless ac's don't work as well, and are much more expensive. go to icmag and do a search.

Well not being an asshole as you say just all you read are people acting like if you need a fan get the one that will blow the house down but not a single thought as to how much noise will be coming from lets say a shed!
seems from what I have seen, but you might know better, that a little ducting and a drain line ( very simple) to a portable unit is much easier than the twin box blue prints with double ducts and drain suckers. I really don't mean to seem pissy but you have to buy the one you mention yes? and even without all the work and wood and duct what do they cost? the 300 or so for a portable one seems fair. Am I wrong?? Remember this is not the first time I have asked about P A/C and not one person has said they know of a good one but they are in all the lit from the sites just no one that has practical experience... Does that help..

look what i found, first search, third topic.... took, maybe, 30 seconds?

I have practical experience using them in a server room in Texas. I did not like the dbl levels. We had three brands. All 1200 btu models. All louder than I'd want for "stealth". They cooled reasonably but seemed to not cool a full 1200 btu. After I left the company a 2400 btu mini split was put in and you could not hear it when I went to visit a friend. It sold me on having one for my new build.

Do you own a home or is this a rental? House or apt? If you own a house, one can be installed discretely and no one would know from outside the room. All tubing can be run from attic and drain can run into a container in the growroom or outside the growroom.

Portable a/c are ok but have limitations. They are much better for convenience than building a box, but you may get a more more efficient cooling and a quieter system from a window unit in a box.

Also, make sure you get a dual hose unit. The ventless or single hose ones are nearly useless in a growroom loaded with heat.

you'd have to buy an ac, not the exact make an model of what's in that thread; if you look at the schematics, it pretty much points out all the principles. i'm a diy'er, and would rather go this route, and have a better control over temps than use a stand alone model. i had one (small, can't remember the size) that absolutely did not work for purposes intended. it would cool the room 5 degrees, that's it.

during the winter, instead of ac i use outside air drawn in by a regular dayton. the blower is on a temperature controller, and turns on and off automatically, effectively cooling the area. disregard if you're working a sealed room, but it's a thought, if it could work for you....

Very nice. Not sure the way to go because the only openings will be out the hollow floor to the outside of out building. Guess the box plan works, just if a little cash was all that was the issue then I was willing to spring for it. So I guess there is not really a model that would work in an 8x12x8 right? Just have to build the monster box. Now that will be inside completly with only duct out so hmmmm.

I have this one
http://www.compactappliance.com/PAC8000S-Koldfront-8000-BTU-Ultra-Compact-Portable-Air-Conditioner/PAC8000S,default,pd.html
it works well but will not cool your entire area. it is also not silent, 10 feet away I can't hear it, at 5 feet I can.

I bought a window ac from Best Buy because it was cheap and couldn't find the portables at stores. Look on the internet, tons of portable units. What I did was get a piece of sheet metal and cut it and bent it to form a 4" deep duct housing which I sealed with duct tape.
Its a pretty clean application. Then I bought a 4"x8"x6" round duct fitting that I connected and taped all together. It works pretty good.

It isn't quiet, AC will never be quiet like a fan on low or med. NOT GONNA HAPPEN. The condenser is always going to make a lot of noise.

What's your setup is the best question. then with everyone's help, you can figure it out. How many lights? Air cooled? Co2 burner? Soil/hydro?
