Extension cord for ballast itself or 12/3 extension cord for an outlet?

I've been doing some reading and have learned that it is in fact alright to plug in a ballast/light into an extension cord so long as the cord is of good quality. I was originally looking at this

Everything I've read recommends a 12 gauge wire and this seems to be it right here. To play it extra cautiously I'm only going to have the single light plugged into this extension cord so as to only draw the 9.6 amps from the cord and not burn my house down :) Now here's my dilemma, I just found this right here

Do any of you guys have experience with using this cord right here? I'm thinking that this is the clear choice right here because it's made from the manufactures of my ballast I believe (since it has the same plug in as my ballast), so I would think that this is my best bet but is it? It sounds like it might be at first, but upon looking at the descriptions of each cord the lamp cord is only rated as a medium duty cord but the extension cord on Amazon is rated as a heavy duty cord. So does this mean that the hydro cord is worse than the Amazon cord or perhaps a heavy duty hydro cord is more heavy duty than a normal extension cord? But what's good about the hydro cord is it plugs straight into the wall and not an extension cord right? I'm really curious here because going with Amazon means I get the thing in 2 days flat with free shipping and it's $10 bucks less and that doesn't include the shipping.

Can any of you guys chime in here? Is the hydro cord better since it's specifically built for ballasts? Or is it in fact worse than the 12/3 extension cord I'm looking at? Thanks guys!

The one from the hydro store is for between the light and the ballast the extension cord would be ok, do you really need 50 feet though if so I'd maybe go with a little heavier gauge extension cord just to be safe imo.
