basically, a study was done at a university that showed when misinformed people were presented with facts, their opinions don't change.

Its peoples Ego's. Ego's are like a bottomless hunger that must constantly be fed. The truth hurts the Ego more than anything and many people will defend their Ego's vehemently. No one knows they are doing it, they just can't believe anything that doesn't click with the world they have built around their ego's, to do so would cause chaos.
