First grow with DIY bubbleponics

Hey Everyone,

This is my first post <cherry pop>.

I've been researching the interwebz (especially here) and reading books for a few months figuring out what grow system would fit my needs most. I ended up building a bubbleponics-like system and purchasing a 400w HID light.

In general, I usually always route for the DIY method - it's cheaper and usually minimal on time impact. Plus, I'm good with my hands.

So far, I have some seeds from a bag just starting to sprout in some one inch rockwool cubes. I plan on transferring them into the net pots once I see some foliage.

I have a few questions, if someone wouldn't mind giving me the 411. Again, I am new at this.

1. I've read about reflective mylar and white paint and such. I've also seen systems where people seem to mount CFL's on the sides of the plants. What system would work better? In my stiuation lateral space is not an issue in my basement.

2. What nutes work best? I currently have a bottle of General Hydroponics something er other (the name escapes me but it's for the growth cycle). Does this stuff work well? What works well for flowering?

3. What's the minimum amount of overhead space for a grow area with a 400w light? And does gently tying the plants over help in keeping the plants from moving upward so quickly?

4. I brew beer from grain, as well. Has anyone ever used any portion of weed in their brew process? How'd you do it? What was the overall effect?

Sorry for all the questions. Most of my questions I've been able to answer by using the search feature, etc. If anyone's interested, I'll post pics as I go along. Thanks in advance to everyone who posts and helps the new kid out!

Hey bro i will answer what i can.

1: Are u useing CFL's for veg or the 400watt HPS all the way?. If u are using the CFL's then it is worth it to put lights on the sides of the plants but not nesscary. If u want big plants veg them longer with alot of CFl's. The 400watt will be plenty to flower them.

2: I heard General Hydroponics work great. I would def reccomend them.

3: I think it is 22" but i am not sure. As for the "tieing thing" it is called LST (low stress training) yes it will help with the height of the plant but it mainily exposes the lower branches to more light thefore increasing your yeild.

4: Sorry have no help for this one lol.

Hit up my grow the link is in my sig. You can find me there anytime if you have anymore question.bongsmilie

Thanks, man. I'm pretty good on everything, I think. My only concern is my basement is only 5 feet high. so with the 400w light in there, and tub for the bubbler, I lose between 1-2 feet.

Hey Everyone!

So it's been about a week. Things are going well, I surmise. I do have one question about seedlings.

I have six seedlings sprouted with their first set of 2 leaves. 2 of seedlings have a set of leaves that are nearly lateral. I have another two with a slight curve bending down. And then the last two are bending quite a bit looking nearly like a sorry sack of shit.

Is this normal?

I realize I'm working from bag seed and therefore, it's probably a mix and match of strains. The two who are lateral look nearly identical, as do the two who have a slight curve to them. Comparing those 2 sets, the lateral leaves are very full and wide while the slight bends are kind of spiny and thin. In my head, I'm assuming they are just two different strains.

All four of the above have had their main root hit the water at an inch below the net pot (one's really taking off with about 4 inches of growth under the net pot). All four also are nicely vibrant and green.

Other factors to consider: 400w MH light hanging at 3 ft away from tub. RH at 55. I spray the seedlings once a day with fresh water. The seedling stalks are kind of crooked but not drooping. Just some slight bending and leaning. Not one of them is at a perfect 90 degree angle pointing up. No leaves are browning, even on the 2 that look like shit.

Any suggestions are welcomed. Including when to start on nutes, lighting suggestions, etc.

The two retards are probably going to get pulled in the next week.
