First time. Flood and Drain questions

Hi there. I've been wanting to grow for some time now and I had the opportunity to recieve a tent with equipment from a friend. For the past few weeks I've been doing research and I have a pretty good idea about my set-up. Still there are a few things I couldn't find an answer to (maybe I overlooked something on this forum, but there are a lot of threads).

Set-up: 1x1x1,8 meter tent, 600watt lamp, etc.
I'll be using the ebb and flood system which I'm building myself. Just a recevoir and floodtray on a low table above. I still can't decide how big they should be, but i'm only growing a few plants max 5. Since it's a first try I'm going to stick to an autoflower trying to learn with the nutrients and such. Would a 60 liter recevoir and a 60x60x15 centimeters floodtray work?
As a medium I'm thinking of clay pebbles in the floodtray.

Now I'm starting from seeds and I have a small plastic propegator. I see many people using rockwool cubes, but it's not that easy to get around here. I've been growing other plantseeds in wet paper towel and a plastic bag and planting them in soil, but the clay pebbles make that impossible i think. Anyone a sollution?
I can get net pots, but I don't know if it's necessairy as the roots can grow everywhere.

If there's no other way I could get some 20 milimeter diameter, 2,5 milimeter high rockwool cubes in Ikea (which I dislike because you cannot just hop in and out). I would bring them down to the good PH, I put the seeds in there and put them in the propogater, would this work and any tips?

When I could see the roots I would move them to the floodtray. But here's something I can't figure out. Everywhere I read when the table is flooding the water shouldn't be too high. What is too high? Since the seedlings don't have big/long roots coming out of the rockwool yet, the water has to go up untill the rockwool cube. Maybe later in the process I can reduce the hight of the overflow, but then I have to clear out the floodtable...
Can I just let the water come that high (untill the rockwool) for the entire grow or is there another trick?

I also want some confermation about the flooding times. The lights will be on for 18h. I think I have to flood 4 times during light and 1 time during dark. The pump stays on for 15 minutes after the water reached it's max hight so the roots have +15min of water. Offcourse this can change (plants growing bigger, insufficient water intake, etc.), but to start with this should be a good schedule? I do have an PH and PPM meter and I understand how that works.

That's it for now. I hope you guys can help me get started.

seedlings can start in a sponge even, dont over think it.
size of trays is a personal decision. If the tray fits your needs, its the perfect size.

couple feedings during the day, one at night is fine. it only has to rise an inch or so,
this wont change unless you got a hot dry room, check your container bottoms for moisture.
I never once saw a plant suffer from under watering/feeding.

3x3ft (1Mx1M) trays are commonly available so you may as well just got for one of those as you will probably want the extra room in the future. A 100L res will be better so when you flood it doesnt expose your pump after the water level drops a bit. Clay pebbles are good but use pots instead of just putting the pebbles in the tray. This way you dont need as much clay and you can move the plants around if you need to.

Avoid the rockwool if you can exactly for the reason you suggested. It stays too wet when you flood it. The great thing about clay is you can flood it as much as you want as it does not retain water. You can still start your seeds in paper towel, just leave them in there a couple of extra days til they sprout, then just carefully place them in the clay balls. You will need to hand water them for a week or so until the roots take hold of the clay, at which time you can start flooding them. When you buy your flood and drain fittings you will see there are extenders for the drain fitting. Just use one extender and you have your flood level set.

This flood schedule is fine. Experiment with different schedules until you find the right one but you have a good starting point. Good luck!
