Leafy greens id choose led or t5...t5 is a largerer spread..cheaper start price on good units...led are nice for fruiting or flowering as there spectrum makeup allows the plant to perform better. Leds are also very expensive for a decent unit.

floros have more options and can be swapped on the fly to change spectrum's. i have also heard of great results with UVB and UVA bulbs.

Dont buy into ho bulbs or uva uvb bulbs...just get a cheap red/purple led put it close...it will make uvb for sure

No.

YES!

Any questions? Lol
It's one of my favorite reads.

Since I got into diy COB and had plans to expand from a 2x4 to something much larger, I planned on building a COB setup that will cost close to $700-800. since reading that thread and hearing of the high potency floros can produce I am giving floros a strong consideration.

I don't know the prices yet and am still researching the best setup for floros so I can compare to equivalent COB lighting.

In the spirit of rambling, I want to create a good "catch all" thread for newbs. I can't tell you how much advice I give (I'm a fucking newb that doesn't know shit) to newbs and veterans alike on DWC techniques that I steal from other threads and my minimal experience. Hell, I have found and researched some amazing cannabis specific soil recipes and I don't touch the stuff.

I also feel that too much good information is hidden too deep in threads. There is great advice on building diy cob setups, but the good advice may not be till the 20th page. I spend 99% of my time on this forum reading. I can read at over 1000wpm. I still don't want to read 20 pages of junk and bad advice to find good info.

I don't know if anybody would like to help me in this, but I plan on making one for at least DWC. I would however like to make a good one that has everything linked in one spot for the newb section.

And I mean everything from diy builds to nute mixes and lighting.

I think your best move is to use LED for the visible spectrum and then run a good UVB T5 on a separate circuit, so you can control exposure- and turn it off when you're in there. This gives best of both worlds results without compromising safety or efficiency. Yes, you'll want to replace the T5 regularly, but the LED will live on and on and their efficiency will pay dividends for as long as they live.

Best of both worlds. I like your idea. I'll add it to my plans.

My next tent will be a 5x5x8 or so. I honestly haven't decided yet and want to get my method down before I drop 2k on a new room. So four t5 lamps (2uvb 2uva) spread out may be a good spectrum booster. I was also considering UVA and UVB led on a seperate circuit mounted to the same heatsinks as the COB'S.

No good UV LED out there yet, unless you wanna drop $40K lol

Feel free to put links here. This is a catch all thread. I hope that this will flow into whatever without the constrain of a thread topic.

I am told T5 lack the penetrating power of other light types. Not sure if that is true or not. I have just about every lighting type i can think of, within reason.

3 - 400w MH
8 - vero 29 cobs
2 quantom boards
1 - 8 bulb 4 foot T5
3 - 2 bulb 4 foot t5
a crap ton of 22w 4 foot intregrated LED strips (6500k)
10 bridgelux 4ft led strips (3500k)
about 500 feet of waterproof 44 foot 5000k rolls of led (no idea why i bought these)

I like the cobs the best. Ping @robincnn for your cob needs. He is a good resource and will treat you right. He also carries these quantom boards, they're pretty cool. Worth a look

so anyone add UV light to their grow setup? If so, what ratio do you use? What wavelength? I was thinking about adding some UVA to one of my grow light platforms. Its about 450 LED watts at the wall. about 3% of the light UV. Not sure if that is right...

Add UVB from what I'm told. As I understand, it is set on a different timer from your normal lights. So say 1x2' UVB lamps above your cobs that turn on for 15 minute cycles for 4 hours during the middle of your light cycle. That would probably be good for a 2x4 tent.

UVA has uses, but I understand UVB to be the the producer and UVA to simply make bigger trichromes.

But as I stated, I don't actually know shit.

Hence the 315! ;)

This is a common misconception, but think about it; if the lamp REALLY emitted useful levels of UVB, it would be dangerous to work under. They make frost because they have more blue than HPS.

If you want UVB, buy a lamp that makes it deliberately. Currently the best combination of performance and cost effectiveness is T5.

looks neat, seems kind of a dick move to make it 315 instead of 400 watt, you know, so you have to buy a new ballast. do they make these in 400w?
