George Will on why Republicans need to be more libertarian...

Me and George think alike on this, hence he is obviously on to something :-). The Republicans are doomed if they don't slit the throats of the socons in their midst.

"The Republicans need to pick a new type of presidential candidate, he says,...one who tilts toward the libertarian side of the Republican Party’s fusion of social and laissez-faire conservatism. Most voters already favor less punitive immigration policies than the ones angrily advocated by clenched-fist Republicans unwilling to acknowledge that immigrating — risking uncertainty for personal and family betterment — is an entrepreneurial act. The speed with which civil unions and same-sex marriage have become debatable topics and even mainstream policies is astonishing. As is conservatives’ failure to recognize this: They need not endorse such policies, but neither need they despise those, such as young people, who favor them. And it is strange for conservatives to turn a stony face toward any reconsideration of drug policies, particularly concerning marijuana, which confirm conservatism’s warnings about government persistence in the teeth of evidence."

<edit> this was in the comments section from Wills article. It made me chuckle.

"I agree wholeheartedly and still I will share a related joke that I feel Mr. Will would not tell

Gay marriage and weed legalized on same day. Leviticus 20:13 "If a man lays with another man he should be stoned."

What the Republicans need is a healthy dose of libertarianism. Republicans already claim to be for small government and fiscal prudence; they have failed on those points and they need to fix that! The Republican message seems to be: "We promise to be just as irresponsible and foolish with the public funds as the Democrats but with the added bonus of crushing all of you heathens under our heel because, well, God wants it that way".

My advice to Republicans: Go and talk to Ron Paul and get your minds right, then nominate Gary Johnson in 2016.

Yeah, Barney Frank is excellent on social issues, unfortunately he is a Democrat who will spare no expense for any pandering, vote buying enterprise when you and I are footing the bill. I would be tempted to vote for Barney if I could despite the fact that he refuses to reign in government.

It is a rare event to make George Will look foolish but Barney managed to do it in that exchange.

I watched it live. Paul Ryan was pretty quiet thru the whole thing
And Will looked like he was getting pissed off
