Godless: The Church of Liberalism

Generalities depicted as facts wrapped in witticisms

Witty exaggeration can indeed be both humorous and entertaining, and I think this is why Ann Coulter's books sell so well. Her black-and-white view of the world which she articulates so well in this book with her razor-sharp wit is reassuring to those who already have such views, and is a guilty fascination to so many others - like a bad car accident from which you cannot look away.

However, what will drive the discerning reader of this book insane is not the author's opinions, which she has every right to hold and express, but how she plays fast and loose with the truth to indict an entire group of people - liberals - as godless silly people with a singular creed. For example the author states "Everything liberals believe is in elegant opposition to basic Biblical precepts." What precepts would those be? Perhaps "Render to Caesar the things that are Caesar's, and to God the things that are God's" (Mark 12:13-17; the same passage appears, slightly modified, in Matthew 22:15-22 and Luke 20:20-26)? Or maybe "Religion that is pure and undefiled before God is this: to visit orphans and widows in their affliction." from the book of James?

Another passage in this book that mystifies me is "If a Martian landed in America and set out to determine the nation's official state religion, he would have to conclude it is liberalism, while Christianity and Judaism are prohibited by law. And not just in Cambridge, Massachusetts, where it's actually on the books, but throughout the land." If the outlawing of Christianity is on the books in Cambridge, Massachusetts, why is it, with just a cursory web search, that I can find a listing of 50 churches in the town of Cambridge? Law enforcement must indeed be lax in that jurisdiction if the author's facts are correct. These churches include those of Baptists, Catholics, Mennonites, Nazarenes and Episcopalians. Perhaps Ann does not consider these "real" Christian churches? She does, at least, openly indict Episcopalians as not really counting among the redeemed when she states "Howard Dean left the Episcopal Church--which is barely even a church", so maybe these other Christian groups are not "real churches" by her standard either.

I won't argue the fact that there are some real navel-gazers counted among those that wear the liberal label. However, liberals are far from the monolithic group that Ms. Coulter describes. If they were, you would not have such a diverse group as Russ Feingold and Joe Liebermann and their respective supporters sharing the Democratic party and often in real disagreement about its future direction. In summary, I had an easy time debunking many of the author's "facts" with only a casual effort. Before she puts pen to paper next time, maybe she should think about one particular passage that should be very familiar to anyone who embraces her Bible as Ms. Coulter purports to embrace hers: "Do not testify as a false witness against your neighbor" (Exodus 20:16).

==============================================
Brainless: The Church of Coultergeist
I forced myself to read this drivel. Aside from the shameful attacks upon the victims of 9/11, there is nothing new here. You find the typical hateful, vulgar lies of the Connecticut Screech, but this time, most of the tripe has been plagiarized. Its sad to see that this wolf has pulled the wool over so many eyes. On the bright side, maybe Ms. (Mr.?) Coulter can take the proceeds of the book sales and finally have something done about that Adam's Apple.

===========================================
Not just myopic, but poorly written
If you can get past her xenophobia, you will find a text that is neither concise nor engaging. While the vast majority of what she writes is sensationalism (I don't think she makes many attempts to hide that fact) the leftovers are boring and less than inspiring.

=======================================
Bimbo Goes to Washington
I picked up this book expecting an interesting read, at least, but I was disappointed. This book consists of an amateurish collection of Ad Hominens that weak attempts to make liberals the scapegoat for ills of the world.

Liberals are godless? I'm sure all the liberal rabbis, priests, pastors, ministers, and other religious people are thankful that Ann pointed their godlessness out to them.
======================================
Huh?

What bothers me about books like this from self-proclaimed "christians" is that much like Coulter identifies all liberals with extremists from the left, non-Christians identify all Christians with people like her. I am a Christian and cringed many, many times reading this mean spirited, nasty tirade. Please don't identify me with this extremist: A true Christian mirrors Christ and I don't recall any Christian literature or incidents in the Bible where Christ's publicist described Him as having a 'razor sharp wit'. I found her comments not witty at all, just sarcastic and snide.

What was the purpose of this book? Was there a point? Nothing new under the sun here either - Darwinism, public schools, stem cell research, environmentalism. Was it me or were a LOT of her examples based on New York? Did anyone else feel creepy reading how she almost waved-away priestly child abuse because it isn't as pervasive as public-school teacher child abuse? And her facts: Canada just lost one of it's largest ice shelves but global warming is a myth. It may cost half as much to educate a child in a private school, but how many Christians can afford it? Who can in good conscience take our energy problems so lightly?

When two extremes face off, it's usually a waste of time to even try persuading the other side to see your point so the natural best thing to do is put together a laundry list of the naughty, crazy things the "other side" has done to make them look ridiculous. BOTH sides of the left/right are guilty of this and Coulter, unfortunately, self-appointed herself the representative to the Christian right. The only ridiculous looking person in this book is Coulter herself.

Christ said that cleansing had to begin first within the church. Maybe before people like Coulter attack the other side, she should take a good hard look at current Christianity itself. How about a good statistical look at the travesty called home-schooling? Maybe we would have more Christian stem cell researchers, doctors, lawyers, etc. intelligently representing us if Christian children were availed a solid education. What about those priestly/ministerly child abusers - a problem that should clearly be addressed within the church and not by secular courts. The divorce rate is higher within the church than in general society. Something is not working on our side of the fence yet someone like Coulter is throwing rocks at the neighbors.

I'll never pick up another Coulter book again but I will pick up the next Bill Maher book. He swears a bit too much for my taste but by golly, he doesn't sit on a high horse.

Quite frankly, I don't think even George Bush pisses liberals off more than Coulter does. For that ... I give her five stars.

here are a few that I thought were pretty good too:

Ignore Her and She'll Go Away
I love Ann Coulter -- she is stupid, self-righteous, ill-informed, lazy, has a mean spirit and a hard heart -- she is a walking poster child for liberalism -- if this is conservatism, who wants it? She doesn't let a pure thought, science or facts deter her from opening her mouth and outright lying, stretching the truth, completely obliterating it or twisting it around to suit her own purpose. And what is her purpose? To bare her chest and flaunt her evil religion of hatred and mean-ness? Or might it be to say the most outrageous thing she can think of in order to make money?? I think to make money. She is a joke, lame, vapid, insensitive, rude, mean and without any intellectual capacity. She's best at sterotyping and slinging dirt -- so what. She's boring and trite and wrong. I did think the book was hilarious -- do people really think like that??? You've got to be kidding me. How sad. I didn't spend a penny on the book, but I hope conservative lackies snap it up left and right. Listen, she's out for a buck -- she doesn't have a heart, her book is seriouosly flawed and ridiculous -- ignore her and she'll go away -- or --better yet, let her go on and on and on -- the more she talks the more she reveals about herself, her dirty politics, her absence of any intelligence or thought. If this is the religion she preaches, I don't want to join. She's ugly and her book is stupid -- don't take it too seriously though. Money is money and she's making it hand over fist -- no wonder the world is in such poor shape -- people like Coulter run the place while the rest of us just shake our heads and wonder --

=================================================
I'm a liberal but I don't fit Coulter's stereotype
I couldn't read past the blurb on the outside cover. Coulter had so many sterotypes just in the blurb that I wanted to throw the book at the wall. (Fortunately I just have to return it to the library. I didn't waste my money on this book.) Liberals are this. Liberals are that. Bull. I'm a liberal, but not an extreme liberal. I am pro-life, believe Jesus is our Savior, and find Darwinism silly. I'm also a feminist, believe all religions are equally valid, and our government system that was formed hundreds of years ago simply doesn't work in this modern era. Coulter's stereotypes make her come off as completely ridiculous. And for being such a Christian conservative, why is she showing so much cleavage on the cover? Let them buy the book for your wit, not your lumps.

===========================================
THE END

The Republican "talking heads" have become some of the most repulsive creatures in American politics, no less than Michael Moore. Coulter and the Neocons have gutted and dismantled the party of Ronald Reagan- while claiming to be its legitimate heirs.

Not true.

If you want to read a REAL conservative book, check out WHERE THE RIGHT WENT WRONG by Pat Buchanan. It will help you understand why the Repubs are doomed.

Or maybe "Religion that is pure and undefiled before God is this: to visit orphans and widows in their affliction." from the book of James?

So ... ? Ceasar is not God, so follow the rules of the government and at the same time, follow the Commandments of God. One of God's Commandments is "Thou Shalt Not Steal." I've said many times that taxation is theft when taken by force from one, in order to be given to another. And the orphans and widows? ... Fund their care through private charities and direct, voluntary, private donations. That would be in compliance with the edicts you posted above.

Caesar is the government, and when Christ said that he was referring to the government at the time.
Guess what, they had taxes back then, and Christ was telling the people to pay their taxes.
Not many people are donating to private charities because of Katrina, it's called being disaster numb.

I'd call it not disaster numb ... but more like disaster DUMB! 26 billion sent to New Orleans so far ... and because of corruption at the local level, the infrastructure is still in ruins and the people are still living in the FEMA trailers.

I'm talking about the rest of the nation.... People have donated so much to the desasters that happened over the past few years... Katrina, The earthquake in Pakistan, The Tidal wave in Indonesia, the list goes on and on... People are disaster numb.

I think you're right, Dank. I'm not arguing the point at all. All I'm saying is the waste and corruption that occurs in government run "charitys" is shameful.

Oh where to begin?! The left is mad and on the defensive again, trying to defend their crazy ideas and views of the world. When anyone disagrees with their view, the person is automatically demonized. Just a bunch of old, stupid hicks, yada yada yada. It\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\'s a political book, so of course she was being political in her objective. Personally I read this book and can understand why the left is mad and on the defensive; they have such a hard time articulating their thoughts and ideas. The thang about the martian was an analogy, not fact, which was obviously taken out of context. She is openly christian; the left hates christians, christianity, and all it believes. The left shoves tolerance down our throats. where is the tolerance here? I want to see the author of this piece debunk any of the facts written. If you check the back of the book, you will find copius footnotes and references for her sources. She obviously knew the left would try to debunk and spin her words and ideas. Then the attacks and name-calling start \\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\"hate and vulgar lies\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\" and then the shot about the adam\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\'s apple is typical left--no substance, just hate. At least the conservatives can back their arguments up with facts and real logic & science. Plagiarism is the unauthorized use or close imitation of the language and thoughts of another author and the representation of them as one\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\'s own original work. Ann gave credit to her sources and documented where she got those sources! More typical spin.You picked up this book?...... Right. Disappointed?....... No way. With all due respect, I don\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\'t think you read this book, I think it was just copied and pasted.And Bill Maher? \\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\"Politically Correct\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\" guy? The guy that is left of ABC? and was fired by ABC! lol Indie.

indie, what's with the back slashes?

it really screws up the flow of any paragraphs you are posting. Try not using them, it make what you may be trying to say hard to read. It's almost as bad as someone writing in Ebonics.

Ann Coulter just makes generalizations which may have a small grain of truth, but she is by far not the definitive truth.
At best she is a hack.
