Growing in kitchen

So I was wondering about growing in places like your kitchen where lights are on all the time. If your growing with somehing like an aero garden isn't putting it in a place where the lights go on and off all the time (not the aerogarden lights the kitchen lights) wouldn't the plants not grow correctly? I want to build a little set up in my kitchen that's open so I can see all the plants but would putting them in a cabinet be better so that they get darkness?

Its ok for vegetative growth and all... But, when your flowering, it has to be absolutely dark,.. like 100%:hump:

More than likely the light bulbs you are using for your kitchen and other living areas aren't doing much for the plants anyway. I mean that.. there won't be any intensity, they are possibly incandescent(which you don't grow with).. I wouldn't worry about that. Now the question is what are you gardening? You don't really "flower" some herbs like rosemary, so it's fine to leave it out in the open. But maybe you are flowering peppers, or tomatoes, or whatever it is...? What you decide to grow will sort of dictate what you need to do......good luck! and happy gardening!

I like to have it close so I can cut off what I need while im cooking. I used to have my aero garden setup in the kitchen. The herbs did well however tomatoes didnt do so well and I was guessing its because I have florescent lighting in my kitchen that would be turned on when the AG lights were off disrupting my tomatoes dark time. If anything id rather get a cabinet or something to grow in that blends with the decor rather than a big tent.

Bigrick - sorry I have been away from the computer. Pretty busy working, but I stumbled upon this thread again. If you've got some fluorescent lights I would definitely use them for the hers. What kind of tomatoes are you trying to grow? Is it a strain that grows fairly large (height wise)? You could for sure get a cabinet of some sort that would sort of blend in with everything. If you're a handy man you could even build it yourself. If I were you though, I would look at the dimensions of the size lighting you're going to be using. That way you can be sure to get a cabinet with enough depth and height for the light and plants you'll be using and growing. If you leave the cabinet open while the light is on you shouldn't have much of a heat problem. If you leave it closed, you'll have to do some ventilating. I'd say get a 250w system if you're wanting to keep things small and relatively cheap. It's getting closer to spring for some though, so you may already be heading outside sowing a BOMB garden! Good luck and happy growing.

You won't have any issues with growing the herbs in the kitchen as long as they are near a window, the kitchen lights won't do much for them as someone else mentioned. As for the tomatoes, I think you will save a lot of time, effort and money on equipment if you just grow them outside. We grow the same way, herbs in the kitchen on the ledge and tomatoes outside. We don't have a lot of room for gardening outside though so we have our tomatoes out there in some reasonable size pots and they do great
