Growmau5's BML Spydr clone: a diy led build

but is it really worth the time, effort, and money, to have to mess around with another light for 5-15 minutes a day??
Sounds like diminishing returns to me. However, I look forward to seeing someone test this idea.
The Pfr effect is well documented and tested in plant science. A number of respected growers (including some on RIU) have tested, observed and verified that it does what its supposed to do. I haven't yet seen anybody do a full side by side just for this that could even remotely be considered a valid scientific test.

I use it to ensure that my long flowering sativas (the ones that just keep on growing) finish in a reasonable amount of time. much better than shortening my light period to an 11/13 day/night cycle. It works.

I haven't spent the time yet, but will, to look at the science behind it. Anecdotal "evidence" is like statistics, you can "prove" anything you want with it. Don't get me wrong, I don't discount anecdotal evidence, it is the overwhelming abundance of anecdotal evidence that convinced me to grow, in an effort to curb the progress of my lady's MS. This is also the reason I take discussions on what does or doesn't work very seriously. We all know that the cannabis growing community is riddled with myths and false "evidence", so I question things, and won't always settle for pat answers. I am however, guilty of not doing a little homework on the subject before questioning it.
I haven't heard of a single 730nm user on RIU complaining about how it didn't do anything.

It's hard not to notice the drastic effects of 730nm. If you have it on during the day, the plant will stretch like crazy... Try it yourself if you don't believe me. I dare you!

Of course that by itself isn't conclusive evidence that 730nm pulses at lights out will increase yield and/or shorten flowering time, it's well known that other types flowers do have a ton of documented experiments of the effects on 730nm. It's not just the effects of flowering that's studied. 730nm, for example, is known to inhibit the germination of lettuce seeds. That is more than just anecdotal evidence.

The anecdotal evidence, however, is better than nothing. Nobody wants to grow a control plant when they think it won't perform as well, and I haven't heard any "i tried it and it did nothing" anecdotes to counter it either.

Very true, 4 little epistar @700mA in a 2*2sq and it will stretch like hell :fire:
by using them at nightfall I gain more or less 4 days on each grow, the stretch phase finish way faster

and while I've been thinking about the phytochrome action on germination I got lost at one point ...
the cannabis seeds seems to be "phytocrome reactive" (PS+ type), the P730 (the one you need to germinate) is quiet sensitive but present in very low level originally ... you need 660nm light to germinate
so why the f#ck am I putting my seeds undeground ? and am I the only one to do so ?

Yeah, I always germinate my seeds in the light and it works fine. I can't understand the myth of putting the seeds in a dark spot like a drawer or under a plate to make sure it doesn't get any light. It's so counter-intuitive, although with weed seeds, I don't think it matters to much either way.. I just want the new plants getting light immediately.

check out the new light im building the case is an old 48"L x 24"W x 4 1/4"H florescent light fixture, the ledil angelina's come perfectly to the edge of the frame. Im still adding some aluminum sheet over the face with cutouts for the lights im adding in 20 deep red, 8 royal blues, 4IR, and 3 UV all ran at 700ma. The 8 cobs CREE CXB3590 (3500K 80 CRI) Group CD are ran by 2 HLG-240-c1750A. This is going to be about a 600W light ill send more pics when complete. IMAG0404.jpg

I don't think it's a very good idea to cover passive heat sinks.

when im done with this build im going to be running this light in a two month head to head against a Kind led K5 XL1000 and see how well it out performs the Kind. They will be feeding from the same res so the only difference will be the light, should be posting the results in January.

One problem is the cobs will likely provide more photonic energy causing that plant to consume more nutrients. I suggest separate rezes
