Heads up if you're around metro D.C

Sure looks like the public safety excuse is being stretched a bit far to me. This kind of excuse for the erosion of civil rights has been endemic to 'public safety' regulations for a long time.

If we only get our constitutional protections when the government feels like it, WE DON'T FUCKING HAVE THEM.

Is that clear enough for you?

I agree totally.

Thanks Fogdog, it's nice to have civil discussion, even if sometimes we don't see eye to eye on everything.

Yeah this bill was deceptive, makes me wonder if congressman even read what they're signing off on half the time. Trump signed off on it, but we probably already know he didn't read it or doesn't even care anyways.

I wonder how long the law will last before someone fights it? That article says it's unconstitutional per 4th amendment. I would be so nervous if I lived around metro DC right now. Hopefully more people see this and raise hell with their congressmen.

I also think if this law goes unchallenged, it could be a slippery slope to other cities to try passing something similar.

@tangerinegreen555 , chime in man if you have time, I'm curious to hear your perspective. I respect your point of view
There is a lot of cynicism today.

I understand where you're coming from now. I used to work for an underground utility locating company, we could go on/through people's property also and didn't need permission

Maybe I get too paranoid sometimes and jump the gun and always think the worst.
On property is one thing. Inside the house is another.

I heard this the other day. Both Rep and Dem voted for it.

This shows you what I have been harping on... that their is very little difference in either party.
I'm glad you posted this as if I did they would not believe me.

Another thing that I do not agree with at all and that the Pres did was opening back up the giving military gear to cops.
Agreed on both counts.

The fact that the daylight between Democrats and Republicans is so thin is why I'm organizing with the Progressive Movement. There's a lot of room to the political Left in this country, because both the above parties are so far to the right.

Those of us who want to see a more liberal country have not been represented well it at all for at least 20 years and so building a movement to do it ourselves seems to be the only option left.

Can you take the doors off your house? Live in a glass house? If you have nothing to hide you have nothing to worry about right???

Just another little bit of our rights taken away.

It is never about intent of the law it is about interpretation. We were told at first when they passed the patriot Act that it was just for terrorist. I was blowing phones up and on message boards telling for others to do the same as this was about the spying upon Americans.
Now what are they doing with it? Spying on Americans.
It's not paranoia if it's true. A right wing government supporting fascists in the streets while engaging in wholesale spying on its own citizens with no accountability.

To say I'm alarmed at the direction America is headed understates my concerns greatly.

I think a better question would be

if its actually for public safety

lets see the numbers

how many people per year would have died or been seriously injured if not for this new law vs how likely is it the authority will use and abuse this loop whole to violate your civil rights

based on on the unjustified shootings and drugs being planted by authorities I wouldn't trust them for a millisecond

this is exactly the way it works they just keep moving the line a few feet at a time slowly and discretely

you add this type stuff together with the view points of jeff sessions, Ray Charles could see whats coming

being a bit older, my entire life ive never been worried my vehicle would be searched for no reason and now (in the past 10 years) every time I leave the house I drive past a cop searching someones car

they just slowly moved the line and before long we all just except it as if its the norm... but 20 or 30 years ago it wasn't! or at least it wasn't for me...im sure racisim comes into play for some folks and im sure theyres those with other experience than me

my point is its all the time now and random without just cause

You and I are seeing the very same thing.

Advancing authoritarianism, the tearing down of the walls of accountability and ever more extremism is leading this country in a direction I just flat fucking don't want to go.

What I find insane is the number of citizens who just shrug and think it won't affect them.

im not arguing the merits of these laws, im only pointing them out to say theres a huge difference in our society from 37 years ago

I remember going to the corner store with a note from mom to sell me cigerates (how the fuck to you spell cigerate) when I was 10 years old

I remember family members getting pulled over shit faced drunk and the police gave them a ride home

I remember playing with my toys on the floor at the bar while my parents got hammered and nobody thought anything of it

times have changed and in these cases for the better but somehow "public safety" turned into something different in the past 15 years
its not about protecting the public its about protecting the establishment now

police cars look like something straight out of a mad max film with all that gear

dark tinted windows.. the cars a built to intimidate

the lights are blinding, the police drive crazy aggressive, they got assault rifles and dogs they come in on you 5 cars at a time for nothing

they where combat fatigues for clothes

when I was a kid they drove 4 door old lady cars and wore funny hats with baby blue shirts, now they look like theyre fucking commandos

Here's an article discussing the decision.

Naturally, cops are all for it and civil liberties organizations have grave concerns.

Considering what I've seen already over the past few years, I am on the side of the civil libertarians. The authoritarians have entirely enough toys for killing already.

The planet didn't change; our country did. The corporatists took over and the decision was taken to pacify the population by force.

Those pesky civil rights just get in the way.

If you don't want to argue the merits of increasingly draconian, civil rights violating legislation, then I most certainly will.

This country is in serious danger of falling off the edge of civility into authoritarianism- if it hasn't already.

We've invaded more countries since WWII than the Nazis ever did. We murder innocent people from the sky with impunity as a routine course of business- and we wonder why millions of people around the world fucking hate us?!

We don't need more "security". We need to separate corporations from their ability to control our government and our lives before they destroy the planet and kill everyone on it in the name of quarterly profits!

Who will have the final say on raids now? The Judge was the executive on the case, slightly removed. Infallible detectives and honest as the day is long, sergeants are going to be answerable to ?????. On the dead dog front: The Fed. Circuit covering New York has ruled that an unlicensed dog is contraband and you cannot make a claim if/when the cops shoot it.

Gotta love it when they legalize killing animals. We're next.

And that's a fundamental problem with how our government works for the other 99% of us.

It's time we stopped letting the MSM divide us and unite to demand a better government with full accountability. That means bad actors don't just get a talking to, but fired and jailed, just like anyone else.
