Heatsink question

Ok so I'm gonna build a 9 cob light with citizen 1212 gen 6s, for a 3x3 tent. Gonna run them on 2 meanwell 185h-36a drivers, 5 on 1, 4 on the other.

Now my question is can I use these for heatsinks?

I'm assuming so, as I saw a guy running them with some cxa3070s. Just have to add a driver for the fans as well, and drill the mounting holes.

Anything I'm missing? Thanks for any help!

Yes, they will work fine. Just remember that each COB will depend on the heat sink fan to keep it cool. Those sinks don't have the juice to cool passively. If the fan fails while you're away, temp could fry the COB.

Hmm I hadn't thought of that. I grow at home so I check it usually 2-3 times a day, sometimes more, rarely less. Any idea of the failure rate of those fans when being ran 24/7?

you asked me this yesterday and i swore i answered

yes they work fine but they can be noisy if you have a bunch. and as bhmc said youre dependent on the fan (theyre pretty reliable tho

yeah its pretty much the labor of extra drilling and wiring

i have the exact same cooler laying around and checkerd it out (i think i did that and got ADD and forgot to type an email), if you rotate an ideal holder 45 degrees, you can get all 4 holes for holder and reflector on the flat spot.

blbs only need 2 holes total to use a reflector and are great for your -36A driver

a lot of people lap these coolers as they are not deadly flat

Arctic is a great brand, you probably won't have a failure for many years. Just something to keep in mind is all.

I did indeed ask you yesterday but there's no response. I do the same thing all the time.

I planned to use the bjb holders. Was actually meaning to make sure they'd be fine in this app, but you've already cleared that up.

Thanks for the heads up on lapping. I definitely would have skipped that.

Ah and one more question what about color temp? I was debating half 2700k/3000k, but you have the 4ks back in stock. Maybe half 2.7k/4k? Better to do a combo of color temps or just keep a single color? Gonna be a flowering light.

Personally, for a flowering light, I would do a mix of mostly 3000k with some 4000k added in. Though just 3000k seems to provide great results.

That Was my original plan but the 4ks were out of stock. 4 4ks would be to many? Gonna be a 3x3 array with the 3ks in the mid and each corner and 4ks adjacent to the middle one.
That sounds good to me, especially if you run the 4ks a bit soft and the 3ks a little harder. I've got 5 3k and 5 5k currently, thread is in the cab section. Guess we'll see how that ends up in a couple months.
