Everything one needs to grow mushrooms should be available for purchase at your local hardware store and nursery, except, of course, the spores.

As for what supplies one would need, it depends. There are many methods out there and the supplies needed may vary. Read all the teks that you can find, starting with the PF tek until you are familiar with some of the basic procedures.

Good Luck.

Basidia is right, everything you need for a growing medium you can get at just about any good retailer. also, make a terrarium out of a rubbermaid tub (i personally prefer using an aquarium) The spores are the only problem, or obstacle, if you will. The only way to get spores are to order them (I don't reccomend that) or get a spore print yourself from a trusted friend or from the wild. DO NOT GO OUT INTO THE WILD AND TAKE SPORE PRINTS TO GROW AND CONSUME, EVEN IF YOU THINK IT IS A PSILOCYBIN STRAIN IT IS A BAD IDEA UNLESS YOU ARE A CARD-CARRYING MYCOLOGIST! The way a spore print is taken is simple: just take a LIVE psilocybin mushroom, wait until the "veil" underneath the cap has broken away from the stem but BEFORE it has dropped its spores. This is a time window in a shrooms life cycle of about one to two days, maybe. Cut off the cap. put this cap in the bottom of a clean, disinfected mason jar with the gills facing down and cover. wait 24 hours, and it will have dropped its spores onto the glass bottom, making what else? a spore print. fill the jar about 3/4ths of the way with DISTILLED water, cover with an airtight top, and put in the fridge for later use. There are a few other ways to do this, like taking spore prints on paper and mailing them or using the mycellium culture method, but I find this way to be the best, by far. When growing mushrooms, you simply cannot cut corners, and that is the bottom line. Using tap water, failing to properly disinfect of scimping on anything is simply not acceptable. It DOES affect the outcome of your crop, trust me I've already tried a lot of stuff, and the PF TEK method dis just about as basic as you can get. If you need to know anything or if my logic has some holes, PM me and I can walk you through the whole thing, from start to finish, as I am a brother of the Mycellium.:)

In england they sell shrooms in shops and in markets they are legal to be sold as long as they are not dried.

Aeroguy: why wouldn't you recommend buying spores? I've been thinking about ordering some online. They're, technically, not illegal in the U.S. We do this strictly for mycology research. :)

THE MAIN THING YOU NEED TO GROW MUSHROOMS IS A ...............(DRUM ROLL)......

PRESSURE COOKER. PERIOD.

you NEED a pressure cooker if you want to be succesfull when growing mushrooms.
and it needs to be a decent one...not one you can buy at K-Mart...you need to order one that can go up to 15 psi. and in my opinion you should use rye seed... if you are interested in growing mushrooms you need to visit THESHROOMERY.COM. thats where it's at.

I don't recommend buying anything drug-related online, but thats just my personal policy...I'm not saying you can't, its just that big brother is watching you. Right now. Anyway, a pressure cooker IS good to have, but is not the end-all thing that most people believe. I did not use a pressure cooker last time I grew shrooms, and I simply boiled my jars in a large pot with water in the bottom (put something between the jars and the bottom of the pot so they don't crack from the heat). many people would poo poo the fact that I omit something so supposedly important. However, the important thing about your growing medium is that you completely sterilize it, not necessarily that you do it in a pressure cooker. I know both ways work fine, and by using a large pot you save on the cost of having to buy a pressure cooker if you don't have one. On the other hand, if you DO have the money to spring for a pressure cooker, go for it. Just understand that it is not an Earth-shattering issue. When I used a plain large pot with a lid to sterilize, I only had 1 contaminated jar, which was probably due to poor syringe sterilization, NOT what I used to sterilize the grow medium. Anyway, there are so many ways to grow mushrooms...its crazy. But there are also just as many things that DO NOT WORK. The point I'm making is, it is fun to experiment with methods, and that is how we discover new things, but if something goes wrong you can easily kill yourself or others. DO NOT grow shrooms willy-nilly. Period. If you are going to experiment, use the scientific method and have a control expereiment before you start trying shit. I say this because the grow medium we use is very susceptable to bacteria, molds, and other types of fungi, many of which WILL KILL YOU! So be careful and ask lots of questions.:hump:

yeah i don't know if ill ever get a pressure cooker, it's just to easy to make brown rice flower cakes and mix with pasturized horse poo, frickin easy and very cheep to set up, i spent about 15 bucks on brown rice, virmiculite, and jars, and at spores101.com you can get good thick spore solutions for 15 bucks. i think i got 5 trips off my initial investment, and used the old cakes to spawn to horse poop and start over for free!

you need the pressure cooker for the brown rice any way...

or did you just boil them? either way, the pressure cooker pretty much guarentee your medium is sterile, and the hp needs to be pasturised, which needs a hot spot in the yard or a slow cooker that you can regulate at 180F for 3-4 hours, or you could just order some form kentucky stud farm...but it causts up the ass. but i suggest getting a pressure cooker and using rye seed and horse poop/wheat straw, rye seed colonates very quickly and the horse poop makes them very potent.

and on the subject of ordering spores you can definatley order them without any worries. they are legal, and there no kind of way for the popo's to check and see if your growing... it dosn't take much if any power, or create heat, and there is hardly any trash.

brown rice flour only needs to be steamed, and as for the horse poo, i get great restults simmering it in a pillocase at 175 for 45 min.

Spores are legal in most states because spores do not contain psilocybin. mycelium on the other hand DOES and IS illegal.
