How close to the edge of the tray?

ye. You could probably fit more in, but it depends on your style of gro.
I just done 2 rows of 4, but next time I will do 3 rows of 4, and Veg for less time.

Mr Green man, how big is your tray and light? I am using ebb and flow. I would really like to know the minimum height the light has to be in order to cover the entire 3X3 tray effectively, i am using a yield master 2 reflector. I have it all the way up which gives the plants 2 1/2' of growth height, but 2 of them stretched while others did not, it is also possible that they did not stretch, but instead are strong plants, one male and one female really took off. I am thinking i would like to move to a 4X4 tray but need to know for sure that a 400 watt will effectively light a whole 4X4 tray, and what the minimum distance the light has to be from the tray.

3x3 is about as far as you can effectively push a 400Watt hps.
You want it as close as you can get it, without burning your plants. With good air cerculation, I keep mine at 10" from the plants directly under neath it. The plants at the edges don't do so well, as they are farther away from the bulb.
Hang a small thormoitor at canapie hight. A good trick is to hang it from the light reflector, that way you can easly see when it is time to raise the light, beacuse the plants would have grown past it.
I was growing DWC, so my set was a little differnt. If you have a 3x3 tray obviously you can't make it wider or longer, so If you want to sqeeze more plants in, make it deeper.
3x3x1 with a short Veg, 12 plants. Prune the bottom third. (Note: I have not tryed this yet, but from what I have learnt, this is what I will be doing next grow.)
