How long do you try to get a seed to crack before you give up on it? Using the paper towel method. Any way to coerce the seed to crack?
3 days?
a week?

If you have to give up using this method your most likely doing it wrong. I have a 100% success rate with this method when germinating my outdoor seeds. They should definitely crack in less than a week.

After 10 days if they have not cracked, I would look at the option of giving up. jmo. They should crack open if the conditions are correct within 3-4 days

Most everything has been within 24-36 hours

What about scoring them once they been in wet paper towels?
or Dropping them in a glass of water over night?

I would expect the seed to germinate within 48 hours usually, i would give it up to 5-7 days (depending how bad i needed that seed to germinate). it's up to you.

I dont like seeing things go to waste but then again I dont like wasting my time either

After seeing a seed not germ after 5 days, sometimes I will take it out, lightly scuff it on some sidewalk so it thins the casing a bit, and put it back with a dash of superthrive. I've had a 30% success rate this way. Also make sure it's in a warm (~85) place and getting no light through, also that it is wet but not so wet that it can't get air.

i never could get one of those paper towels to work for germinating either. I just ended up getting some of those little jiffy kits. you can get them pretty much anywhere that has flowers. The kit consists of 8 or 10 little dry discs of soil that you get wet and just stick the seed in. ( the right way with the pointy end up.) they worked great for me

If people are having a hard time germinate seeds I would expect them to encounter some difficulties throughout their grow. People should make sure to invest their time into carefully researching information as you gain experience and become more knowledgeable.

Forgot to mention
Paper towel method between 2 plates on a germination mat
that is a good method, you need to check the temps on that mat. I have used germ mats b4 and cooked seeds. temps were like 105. After that I put the mat on a timer and monitored the temps. Now I just stick them on top of my fridge or cable box.

heres a little story. had 4 seeds. 3 of them germinated within 36 hours. the 4th one was a little slow. planted the 3 that germed. forgot about the 4th one. it was about 8 days after i planted the other 3. it was germinated alright growing in the paper towel lol.
