I have a difficult time swapping dwc buckets and untangling airstone tubes from roots

I don't have terribly much trouble lifting the plant and roots from old bucket into the new bucket, my main difficulty is the air stone tubes entwine heavily with the roots, which grow all around them, and there is a lot of difficulty getting the stone and tubes separated from the roots.

There must be an easier way to do this. I hold the heavy plant by the net pot lid with one hand, and with the other I work to move the tube down through the roots until it is in the bottom of the bucket entirely, so I can then pull the tube and stone out along the sides of the bucket, safely by the roots. But it's very tiring, as it takes me 2 minutes or so to untangle each tube, all the while holding the plant up with one arm.

Is there a proper way to keep the roots from tangling up with the air tube? I'd be able to just pull the tube straight up and out of the roots if the airstone wasn't connected to the bottom. But with the stone there, it pulls the roots up along with it, and if I kept pulling up it would rip apart the roots. So the only option is to push the tubes all the way down through the roots. I cannot disconnect the tube from the stone, that isn't an option.

First grow and still trying to get a grasp on all this. Feeling like I may want to try something other than dwc next time around. Not sure what though, because I'm not growing more than 2 plants, and I don't want the same res for each plant, as one feeds much heavier than the other. I just need to come up with a better system for removing the tubes and changing buckets a bit easier.

I wasn't even going to change the res at all anymore until flush time, but I've been getting strong ph down spikes the last few days, and it seemed time to switch them out. Seems they last about 2 weeks before the res begins spiking down and it becomes difficult to stabilize the ph.

No root rot or anything. Can't believe those roots! Just got a good look at them again while changing buckets, I'm just amazed looking at them. Big hulking mass of roots. If these plants were much bigger I wouldn't be able to lift them out with one arm so I could untangle the tube with the other hand. So there must be a better way, because I see people with much bigger plants than I doing dwc, and I can't imagine you all would be having the same troubles.

Everything is working pretty well though so far. I'm going to post a few pics in here tomorrow. Tomorrow will be day 29 of flowering.

Thanks for your time

Why not have your air stone connected permanently to a 2-3ft segment of air hose then use a 2way connector to attach this to another hose that leads to the pump. This way you can disconnect your hose before (with two) hand then use one hand to lift the plant and the other to pull out the air hose through the roots. No need to untangle anything and would only take a few seconds.

Simply remove the stone and slide the tube out, homie.
Do you mean remove the stone from the tube? The stone doesn't remove from the tube. They are molded together. I guess that would be the easiest solution though...finding a detachable airstone and tube on amazon. The tube i have now is clear, I'd like a black one so no light leaks in.

Well I'm able to disconnect the hose from the pump beforehand. So theoretically I could then just lift the plant and pull the stone, with the tube attached, from the bottom, down through the roots safely. But the hose, being 3 ft or so, doesn't pull down through the roots so easy, as they are tightly woven around the roots. If I pull the stone from the bottom, there is too much resistance on the roots while the hose above the roots is attempting to straighten to be pulled down. So i need to push the hose from above down through the roots a bit before I can pull the stone from the bottom.

If I could have a connector tube that snaps to the stone, that would work well. I should just find one that has a detachable tube from stone. I want a black tube anyway. If you guys have any suggestions on pumps, tubes, and stones, I'm all ears/eyes.

I'm using two of these right now, two tubes/stones going in each bucket...

My air line ran through a hole in the lid, to a barbed connector I could disconnect and then the stone got moved with plant. Never had to remove the stone, even with months of growth.

Yeah i considered doing that this last time, just moving it all together, not even unwinding the tubes. only issue is i wanted to hydrogen peroxide wash the stones and tubes, impossible to do if I don't unwind them. Upcoming I will definitely just move them together. It's nearing the end of the grow. I'm not looking forward to changing the res everyday for a week or more with fresh water for flushing lol

Dont flush like that, run decreasing EC nutes the last week to 2 weeks. I usually start around 0.4 EC the last week topping up with only water till the end, usually ending up at 0.1EC when i chop. They're still ripening and need a balanced nutrient profile that they might not get just from the reserves in the plant.

Makes sense. Will be a lot easier for me doing that than changing buckets everday. Will do.

I'll never get down to .1 though, as my well water begins at .3 ...That is OK though, flushing with well water, right? I know it's not ideal, but ...

My plants eat so little. I'm amazed at the numbers of ppm/ec people are feeding. The highest I had it was 2.1 ec and the plant responded with nute burn. I brought it all the way down to 1.2, where it is now, and that was the first the EC began sinking on it's own again. The sativa is wanting even less, showing nute burn all throughout. I had her up to 1.5 and had to bring it down. Anywhere above 1.0 and it begins showing burn and EC rising. So it's sitting around .8 right now. Just makes me feel like i'm always underfeeding these plants and going to get lackluster results because of it, but..I can't deny what I'm seeing and what the plants are responding with. They are smaller plants, medium size, week 5 flower now. Should be at their highest EC feeding yet, but they're sensitive to higher feeding. One indica/one sativa
