Be careful using any animal parts, go easy on that stuff! Mostly you want green and brown -- all the vegetable, non-salted/pickled, and some grain foods that we eat. Eggshells for sure, crustacean shells, coffee grounds, leftover oatmeal...
That, plus stuff like lawn clippings, mulched trees and bark, some good soil that's got good bacterial growth, will all help get it going. I've also been told that it needs to be about 3'x3' to get the right moisture balance and temperature stability. Turning the pile (mine needs turning! ) is its, and thusly your, friend. :)
