When Cal White, a franchisee owner with Legacy 420, first opened his weed store in the Wahta First Nation the community could finally buy cannabis locally. The pot shop was open for business in May, right across from Cal’s other successful area business, known to locals as The Wahta Station on Muskoka Road 38.

Legacy 420’s head office is located in the Tyendinaga Mohawk Territory. White’s dispensary was the first franchise to open outside the Tyendinaga First Nation. Why the OPP targeted this community supported first nations business remains unclear at the time of this writing.

“There were some problems with that and certainly with the looming postal strike there’s even more concern about it,” First nations dispensary owner Cal White says.

White entered the dispensary business to provide local access for medical pot, after hearing about the many problems that his community faced accessing weed. For example sight impaired and illiterate customers having to struggle to go online to place their cannabis mail orders. Some patients reported suffering while they waited for delayed packages from Canada Post, lost packages, and the looming possibility of a postal strike causing added stress and panic in his rural community. White knew he had to open a dispensary, and become a local role model of compassion.

Now comes the dramatic second act.

Along with special drug enforcement units, police raided the new cannabis store Legacy 420 and seized a large amount of marijuana on July 22nd. The Bracebridge OPP have charged Cal white and two of his employees ‘bud tenders’ with very serious drug trafficking charges in relation to the Marijuana Dispensary they operated openly.

All three men now face a costly court battle for selling dried flowers. Their next court appearance is in Bracebridge on September 27th. Since being charged, White has stepped aside from his position as President of the Muskoka Lakes Chamber of Commerce.

The future of dispensaries on first nations territories continue to be written by brave men and women like Cal and his employees. Stay strong Cal I know the community is rooting for you. Where there is no victim there can be no crime.
