20170323_113707.jpg 20170323_113701.jpg 20170323_113714.jpg Hello guys. I'm looking for some advice. I normally grow in 5 gal smart pots and get decent results 3 to 4 oz per plant. This run I'm growing in 3 in 10 gal tubs. And the ey fill my space nicely And my questions go to lighting

The particulars
Vegged for 75 days under 1200w (2 600w cool tubes) tubes cool enough to touch
All have been mainline snd lst
Flower at 28 inches
Current height is 33 inches width around the same
Strains are blueberry and sour diesel 2
Coco based skill with fox farm muted.
Space is actually 6x3.9x7
Temps 83 to 86 on hot hot days 79 to 80 Normal days

In the pics above that is the while room from left to right. Notice shadows

So would a single 1k hung over the them in the middle with a decent reflector help achieve a better denser harvest. Or what about 2 600w although either way I'm going to start moving forwards with reflectors. I'm looking for the best way to get a decent yield with these monsters lol
I know it comes down to light spread/ distance but some one Help me out?

One more bump

Little spindly branches popping up everywhere.

Should I exfoliate the spindly stuff and just focus on the main colas to be? Trying to even out the canopy, and buying reflectors for the 600s? Or going with the 1000 for the penetration

I'll post pics Tom. Any help would be appreciated.

600 will penetrate about 12" into a canopy at around 8-10" above. 1000 will penetrate about 18" at about 16-20" above. Either works, just need to train your plant for whichever you want. I run 2 600s in one tent and a 1000 in another. I need to keep my canopy height lower in the 2 600 tent to make sure I get rock hard buds right to the bottom of the plants. If I didn't already have the 600s, I'd get another 1000, mainly to keep my training styles consistent.

That's what I was thinking.... I use the 2 600w for my normal grows. The closet is pretty filled out lol. I left enough room to water them because I'm afraid by the end of the stretch I will not be able to remove them. I still have a couple 400w and 6" fans. I may try putting a 400 between the 2 6s.

I would almost be more comfortable in this case with the penetration from 1k. How much would a reflector(s) help in this aspect.

Also I'm running a mh on the left hps on the right.

Ok so I think im going to go with the 1k. That 18" penetration could be the make or break for this grow.... I'll throw some cfl on the sides for additional lighting. I didn't get a chance to measure but there chest high on me around 4 ft I'd guess. A little less in reality as I main lined. I'm close to 2 weeks into flower and I have allot of lowers that aren't getting much light. I'll post some pics in the daytime.

I can say though I'm having more fun growing 3 huge plants than 6 to 8 smaller ones. Lmfao the first time I have upgraded by decreasing wattage. Logic plants and reality can play some funny tricks on the mind.

Opinions anyone?

Personally i think cooltubes are best suited to be ran vertical in the middle of the area. If placed overhead reflectors are better. Reflector size plays a big role in light penetration and intensity. Smaller reflectors comcentrate the light, bigger ones disburse it.

Ive tryed almost every style of reflector from cool tube to parabolic to 3 bulb refectors. Id say youll have to experiment to find your favs but id say small vented hoods work well with 1000 hps in tents.

I like the tubes, but I do feel allot of light is wasted either passing through the glass or bouncing around unused. That and when placed horizontally they seem to create hotspots that get way more light than the rest of the footprint. I absolutely love the results when they are placed as close as possible to the tops.

That being said I do feel reflectors would help with the light.

Sorry for for the pics with the lights on. Today was prob the last time I will remove them until harvest.they are simply too wide to get through the door

Yea its always nice when you can get the light as close as possible to the colas :) i just done think they ever yielded as good as other hoods for me overall. Too much wasted light. In the middle of the room though you can put plants around it an get each plant as close to it as the colas are overhead. Youll see i like it for the same reason as you, just next to differant buds. Its easy to get big colas with any reflector, but cooltubes are really good at making big lower nugs in a way other reflectors cant.

2x 600w will always do better than 1x 1000w in a given space. 3x 400w will do better than 2x 600w. Same principle light movers work on.

I believe you are right growing for fun. I'm starting to see how we like it for the same reason.
I think I get what your saying about the tubes and vertical. By placing the tubes in the vertical (l) position it would radiate the light in a 360 degree pattern, more efficiently emulating the Sun. As opposed to the horizontal (-) positioning where the light is reflected off the reflector down through the glass.
Ever ran the flow master hoods? Im may even run a 400 in the vert between 2 600w in hoods in the future. Got any pics of your setup buddy

True. I started with cfls moved up to a 400 then 1k ( a 600 and 400) then 1200 (2 600) during those years I worked on getting my yield and quality up after that though things got stale so to speak kinda generic so I did what I always do and tried something different for awhile. And I like this new direction. I used to hate monster bushes lol now I love em, the whole reason I'm considering a 1k ballast with side lighting, vertical, or even just reflectors and another light. Oh yea 3 400w would only out do the 600s if the were really close. I'm pretty sure the 600s have more lumens total. But I could be wrong it's happened before... Lol

Not sure what "flow master" hoods are but if you decribe the size ill bet i have use some brand like it.
An yea i think you get exactly what i mean.

Im not posting any pictures or logs anymore. My last grow posts are from 2013.
My current setup is a 1000 hps in a xxl reflector perpetual. Small personal grow but in the past i did rooms. I like to smoke around a oz a week so it keeps up.

Not sure if this is true in real life but its true on rollitup!
I started with 600's, 6 of them. Then quickly changed to 1kw lights. Even tried 400 watt bulbs.
Never saw the "magic"
Imo, 1000hps is the standard. Good light intensity the others just dont have..

Flow master ac hood dimensions
  • 24 x 21 x 8
  • Tempered flip down glass
  • 6 in flange
I agree with you on the 600s and light intensity. I think the "magic" comes from them being more "efficient". But that depends on how one defines efficiency. I consider efficiency to be the point where you get lumens and penetration (a 1k) As opposed to lumens per watt with less regard to intensity type of argument (a 600w.) To me that's more of a matter of eletrical energy to light conversion efficiency. If that makes sense?

Pretty standard average reflectors.

Yea the 600s are preached as more efficient. Never liked the 600s myself tho just small buds vs a 1kw.
