[Indoors] My take on trimming

In this thread I want to discuss trimming tips and techniques hopefully we can share our tips and learn from each other and also laugh at each others silly trimming rituals or whatever.

So anyway I want to bring up ENEMY NUMERO UNO when it comes to trimming and that is PROCRASTINATION.

Every year there is the outdoor harvest celebration of sorts we all have our little rituals sitting around with friends and/or family trimming up the years outdoor harvest, jammin to tunes, sitting at the kitchen table smoking joints talking about politics or telling jokes or whatever silly ritual you and your friends do.

Sometimes some of us like to try and bring that ritual back for our indoor harvest we make a big deal out of it bringing each of our trimmers buds on a silver plate pop in some stand up comedy, twist up a couple fatties, or what have you - we tend to make sort of an event out of it.

So one day you decide - hey I am sick of trimming it takes way to long - and you curse it - ultimately one day you realize if you didn't procrastinate you'd be done a lot quicker. So now my indoor harvesting consist of me alone with my potted plant next to a drying box with about 20 minutes to spare.

Enemy #2 when it comes to trimming is ......drum roll...........Overdoing it or being a perfectionist - This slows down people a lot, they want to remove every leaf in every nook and crannie. Well I am here to tell you it doesn't matter folks! once it drys its going to look a heck of a lot better then it does from what your looking at, remember you don't need to butcher your buds because the close small leaves just kind of form into the bud and look natural if you trimmed it good enough - simply snip the tip of each leaf so its flush with the bud if you cant snip it at the base of the stalk - now say 20 to 30 snips you should be done with just about any branch on a typical indoor plant.

some more tips to reduce trimming workload for indoors:

1) Grow Smaller Plants
2) Always trim wet
3) harvest only when u find time, partial harvest when necessary - if you find 5 minutes today to do one branch then fine tomorrow you simply allocate another 5 minutes to do another branch
4)Harvest AT your drying area can also save some time in certain circumstances.

so to elaborate more on how I trim personally for noobies: Clip every stem at the stalk, clip every leaf at the stalk, now any leaf that is coming out of the bud clip it just so its flush with the bud....remember its not important how close the clip is because the leaf will generally dry into the bud anyway and make a nice uniform shape but just try to get it as close as you can. A lot of old timers dont even clip the leaves on the buds themselves - this is called in our circle old timer method or I like to call it the halfass way to trim! (joking) - I like to trim that way if its for myself but young people really dislike this style, if its for someone 50 or younger they wont appreciate it and they might even want a refund! :)

I admitted our silly summer trimming ritual above - we all sit around with plates full of branches to trim and usually listen to stand up comedy, music, or radio shows to pass the time so that we can still look at the buds and see where we are driving our scissors into - we designate one person for rolling joints to pass around.

If you grow small plants because you dont like to trim you shouldnt be growing

I trim the large leaves wet and let the smaller "sugar" leaves stay on unitl the final trim before they go into jars

I harvest when the p[lants tell me they are ready according to their trich's.

My growing area and trimming area are the same as my drying area, so thats easy.
awesome list!!

"If you grow small plants because you dont like to trim you shouldnt be growing" lol for sure totally agree

I hope you look at more than just the trichs to see if they are ready, dunno why you mentioned that if your refering to #3 it doesnt seem really relevant, ofcourse you harvest when your plant is ready I am just saying you dont have to harvest all at once as a method to save time or for other reasons you can do partial harvesting.

Thanks

Supplies:
1 pair of stylist scissors. (the kind beauticians use with the curl on one of the finger holes and the long thin tips)
1 platter 24 inch's or bigger
1 good lighting
1 my camping chair
1 plant at a time
1 bud bowl
1 flexable light

I set a platter between my feet and put my elbows on my knees.
It doesn't matter if I sit up or lean over, the platter catches everything.
I've got the light set so that it's below my eye level so I don't get blinded.
I don't like taking scissors to something I can't see.

I cut off a main branch and hold it upside down with my left hand.
I pretty much focus on anything from the stem to 1/3 down the bud.
As I work my way down the branch from bud to bud.
I spin and snip, spin and snip all the way down to the bottom of the branch.
Note how I did not have to flip the branch back and forth and spin it , I only had to spin it.

I flip the branch over once and take the top in my left hand.
I hold it firmly with my thrid and pinky finrger, leaveing me my middle, pointer and thumb to work to bud back and forth.
Since the bud is so plyable, I open it up and cut out every stem I can find.

I don't focus to much on little nipping and like the sculpting method.
If it's sticking out, it gets cut off.
If that little shit would curl down all the time I would nip. All the resins would make it look sweet.
But most of the time it curls up and looks like shit when it dries.

Then, as I finish off each bud, I cut it off and drop it in my bud bowl.
When I get to the bottom of the branch, I rise and repeat.

Depending on how big the plant is,
I'll throw whats in the bud bowl into the drying basket about half way through.

Thats what works for "me".

nice post buddy and good job pointing out some irony in my post lol

you do seem to use sort of a ritual method that I am talking about in my initial post - I just trim it right off the plant in my flower room which is well lit and the drybox is in there so the Idea is that I don't even have to fetch a single object or move even my body really theres no ritual to it as my scisscors are out there with bags to put trim in also its just a matter of of picking up the scissors while I am out there- saves a bit of time for me even if its irrelevant to your setup just pointing that out. I guess it kind of prevents me from procrastination and watching the tube or something when I am deep in my flowering room I stay on task and get the job done asap, If it works for you to do it other ways sure but for it me it doesn't help I am slightly ADD and I always get distracted by something if I bring the buds in the house to trim. One aspect I like about it also is I can stop and start abruptly if needed for even days at a time, hence why I mention the example of only trimming one branch per day, its not that I literately trim one branch a day on a regular basis its just that If I wanted to do just that I could.

With my new method it takes me about 20 minutes per plant, with my old method it took me about 2 or 3 times longer.

So I am still interested to hear others trimming rituals, lets hear it!

Yea I do trim dry outdoor bud but this isnt by choice as there is so much I dont finish till like march and that is why I personally haven't tried to do a dry trimming indoors because wet just seems easier to me, I am sure that is also a consequence of me trimming dry half the year and getting sick of it feeling like I am never getting anything done. I really should give it a try one day and I can see myself doing that at my new operation at least as an experiment.

ok so

1. the buds shrink more than the little stems and leaf so when ya trim wet, then dry them ...the stems and leaf stick outta the bud a bit. no big deal really ..

2. no sticky scissors to deal with. i know ya love finger hash bla bla ...fuck it, smoke weed. besides you still get some just not as much.

3. house wont reek even 1/8 as bad as when wet trimming.

4. much quicker, ya throw on rubber gloves and just use your hands KNOCKING OFF the leaf.

5. goes with number one but it overall has a cleaner appearance.

I like your methods rzza thanks for sharing, I never tried dry trimming when its my own grow, I plan to try dry trimming when I move to my new operation it could be better in that situation.

This is how properly trimmed marijuana should look like, not a shred of leaf. You wait 3+ months for a harvest why not take the hour or two to properly trim them?
