A driver shot his way out of a submerged vehicle today after his car plunged through a bridge guardrail and landed in the 50-degree water of Pleasant Grove Creek in Roseville.

The 28-year-old man, an armed security officer for Thunder Valley Casino, used his handgun to shoot out his vehicle window to extricate himself, said Dennis Mathisen, spokesman for the Roseville Fire Department.

The man made his way out of the creek and flagged down a passeby for help, the spokesman said.

"I have to give the guy credit," Mathisen said. "He used what he had available and helped himself out."

Mathisen said the man, whose identity was not immediately available, was northbound on Industrial Avenue about 9 a.m. in his Ford Focus station wagon when his hands-free device for a cell phone activated, startling him. He veered, and his car when through the guardrail.

The driver suffered minor injuries and was taken by ambulance to Sutter Roseville Medical Center, the department reported. A section of Industrial Avenue was closed for about three and a half hours while crews worked to tow the vehicle from the creek. The roadway reopened at about 12:30 p.m.

so to recap... his "hands free" device scared him into veering off the bridge and into the water, and he used his gun to shoot his way out and possibly save his life

the "good" device almost killed him, the "bad" device saved his life

I don't think my cell phone would ever startle me enough to drive off a bridge. In some places they probably would have charged him with illegal discharge of a firearm.
